40 Forever!

I have not cried like that in a long time... wow.... Garmon did a fantastic job.. Glad I watched it but sh!t that was heartwrenching

Cannot imagine being a parent and having to bury you're child. Hope I never have to go thru that.

Street will never be forgotten as long as coaches like Fran embrace what he meant to not just Iowa basketball, but Iowa in general.

I was 16 at the time and won't forget when it happened. That special was heart wrenching and makes me sad, but also glad that I was able to see him play.

My high school was in the same conference as Mormon Trail, but I somehow didn't see him play his freshman year. Must have been too young to remember him at that time, or missed that game.

There has been no other sports figure that has caused me as much emotion as Chris Street and it has nothing to do with him being a basketball player because basketball did not define him.

So much win here. Fran is the man because of the little things like this. I would shudder to think what would happen if Lick or Stevie were teh coach during Chris' 20th anniversary. I was 6 when he passed and still remember it all to well. But watching the 40 Forever makes all those memories come back plus what it would be like to lose a child to soon. Very heart wrenching but at the same time was very well done. I am already almost 6 years older than Chris was when he passed and there is no way in hell I will make an impact in my lifetime that he did, and that takes away his basketball accolades.

That's one of the great things about Fran. He understands that there is more to an athletic program than just X's and O's. He gets the history here and understands how to utilize that to build excitement or for an event like this, understands the emotions behind it.

Not that he's the only one responsible for an event like tomorrow night (if he had anything to do with it at all) but Fran has shown that he understands the importance of Chris Street to Iowa basketball and the state of Iowa.

I don't really know what Lick or Alford would have had done for this, it doesn't really matter, but there did seem to be a disconnect between both coaches and the importance of the history of the program.

To know what other coaches would have done ask yourself, what was done at the 10 year anniversary, I honestly don't know.

You are right, Fran understands the big picture, it isn't just about basketball and that is exactly Chris Street, it was never just about basketball with him.

I don't know how big a part of this Fran was, but I will bet you my salary that he didn't object to anything that was proposed. Tom Davis told him about Chris before most in the basketball world knew Chris Street. It seems fitting and ironic in that way since Fran is now Iowa's coach, things like that happen for a reason.

I don't know if there was. This year is unique in that the game is actually on the anniversary of his death. 10 years ago there was a game vs Illinois on the 15th and then they weren't at home again until the 25th. The game vs Illinois makes no mention of a celebration for Street.

I'm gonna pull a herby here and not have a link and just go on memory but I'm pretty sure Davis wasn't even acknowledged around the program when Fraud or lick was coach. Can't remember which one.. Hell it might have been both.

I know the timing wasn't as perfect as it was this year, it just bothers me that if something was actually done, I have no recollection of it happening. When you hit milestone years in anniversaries, they have to be acknowledged, not just on that particular day it happened. As I said though, it just happens to be perfect timing for this one.

To me though, it speaks to the Iowa program of how it had forgotten who it was after Davis was ushered until Fran came in. I like how Fran has embraced Iowa basketball history and has made an effort to reconnect with the fans and the former players. Again, it isn't about x's and o's or wins and losses as you said earlier, it runs deeper than that with Fran, something lost for a long time.

What a great video production! But so, so heart wrenching and painful to watch. It made a 47 year old man cry more than once. I had to step away for a while before I could watch part 2.

I grew up in the town of Murray, which oddly enough is kinda between Humeston and Indianola. Even though I was older than Chris and never met him, We were so proud to have an athlete from our area play at the University of Iowa. These were the days when there were only 4 channels on the TV, and nearly every Hawkeye game was on TV, unlike today. It was a big deal on the nights when the games were played as everyone watched. The players became like extended family.
I remember exactly when and where I was when the death was announced. I was a bachelor living in Missouri at the time. I had one channel out of Ottumwa, IA and that is where I saw the alert scroll the bottom of screen. I remember not having anyone around to talk to about it, as Missourians just didn't understand the effect his had on Hawk fans and all Iowans.

I lost it when mike street was telling the story about the sheriff at his front door. I can't even grasp, nor do I ever want to, getting news like that at my front door.

It was his only son. We know Chris street the Iowa bball player, but it has to be difficult for mike and patty street to watch people Chris' age grow up have careers and families.

Just an awful tragedy

As a fan who has been on the fence of the whole Alford/Davis debate all these years, this was the breaking point. What a great man and ambassador of this University. I truly miss these years of my life and shame on me for "wanting more". Thank you for everything Chris Street!

did this happen yesterday?

I feel sorry for you.

Regardless, thanks for posting the video.

I lost a brother to a car accident.

The best way to honor the deceased is to speak of them, and remember them well ... and, in this particular case, play one hell of a basketball game.

Pathetic trolls are pathetic.

I was 11 and never underestimate the influence he had on us kids growing up in Iowa City. I'm not going to lie...I teared up more then once today. He was my idol Hawk...and it he me hard. I'm am very happy that his story continues to touch people.

I was 37... he had influence on us big kids as well.

Didn't mean no disrespect.

No no... I think you read me wrong. He had a great influence on people of all ages. That's just the way that kid was. Sorry rj, didn't mean to imply anything else. He was a great kid! And I enjoyed your post.
