Street will never be forgotten as long as coaches like Fran embrace what he meant to not just Iowa basketball, but Iowa in general.
I was 16 at the time and won't forget when it happened. That special was heart wrenching and makes me sad, but also glad that I was able to see him play.
My high school was in the same conference as Mormon Trail, but I somehow didn't see him play his freshman year. Must have been too young to remember him at that time, or missed that game.
There has been no other sports figure that has caused me as much emotion as Chris Street and it has nothing to do with him being a basketball player because basketball did not define him.
That's one of the great things about Fran. He understands that their is more to an athletic program than just X's and O's. He gets the history here and understands how to utilize that to build excitement or for an event like this, understands the emotions behind it.
Not that he's the only one responsible for an event like tomorrow night (if he had anything to do with it at all) but Fran has shown that he understands the importance of Chris Street to Iowa basketball and the state of Iowa.
I don't really know what Lick or Alford would have had done for this, it doesn't really matter, but there did seem to be a disconnect between both coaches and the importance of the history of the program.
To know what other coaches would have done ask yourself, what was done at the 10 year anniversary, I honestly don't know.
You are right, Fran understands the big picture, it isn't just about basketball and that is exactly Chris Street, it was never just about basketball with him.
I don't know how big a part of this Fran was, but I will bet you my salary that he didn't object to anything that was proposed. Tom Davis told him about Chris before most in the basketball world knew Chris Street. It seems fitting and ironic in that way since Fran is now Iowa's coach, things like that happen for a reason.

I don't know if there was. This year is unique in that the game is actually on the anniversary of his death. 10 years ago there was a game vs Illinois on the 15th and then they weren't at home again until the 25th. The game vs Illinois makes no mention of a celebration for Street.
did this happen yesterday?
did this happen yesterday?
I was 11 and never underestimate the influence he had on us kids growing up in Iowa City. I'm not going to lie...I teared up more then once today. He was my idol Hawk...and it he me hard. I'm am very happy that his story continues to touch people.
I was 37... he had influence on us big kids as well.
Didn't mean no disrespect.
