2017-18 Basketball rotation... Best guess/wish list!

2017 is over and there are mixed feelings on the results. I think almost all of us agree the future is bright. So how about we focus on the future for a little bit?

My best guess and WISH LIST for next years starters and rotation by position to make it easier to follow. Hopefully!

Starters
PG JoBo
SG Moss
SF Jack Nunge
PF Tyler Cook
C Luka Garza

first rotation...
PG Connor Mccaffery
SG Ellingson
SF Baer Claw
PF Kriener
C Pemsl

second rotation...
PG Maishe Dailey or Williams whichever stays?
F Wagner / Uhl Whichever stays?

Caveat I do concede that the SF/F- PF- C spots are very interchangeable with this team so lets not get lost in that debate Please!

Jones will move on I think. That leaves Connor to walk on or one of many other possible options but I think he will play for his dad some way.

WHY the freshman????
Nunge appears to be a more aggressive version of Jarred Uthoff from what I have seen from his tapes and watching a FEW games.

Garza has true C size, skill set and ability! From his tapes and recruiting he could be the most talented and complete C Fran has ever had.

Yeah I get it that it is only highlight tapes and limited views from High school.

The starting 5 is as close to a traditional 5 Fran has ever had and IMHO will be the most talented by far.

I think we will have a much better than expected result and yet there will be some questionable nights as we saw this year. Fran seems to coach a very wide ranging open or free style of play that invites those things.

Hopefully we will see in-game coaching improvements and a better answer to late game and close game outcomes from Fran. That needs to improve a lot but overall I like the style of play. It's just not working well in close games and high pressure games. Nervous and inexperienced players don't execute well with Fran's standard game plan.

what do you think?

If both freshmen are good enough to start, we will be really good next year.

As far as close games go, the last 3 years we won about 25% of close games. This team full of freshmen won about half. I'm pretty sure the whole losing more than our share of close games problem is solved.

Starters - Bohannon/Moss/Baer/Cook/Garza

Rotation - McCaffery/Ellingson/Wagner/Pemsl/Kriener/Nunge

We should be blocking shots or sending people to the line. There's no reason to ever give up a layup with 35 fouls available inside...28 if we don't want anyone fouling out of the game.

Excellent closing point... we can and should be more aggressive in the post.

I'm not sure how you keep Pemsl off the floor next year. He's going to be a beast down low and we need a wide body on the glass. He needs that mid range jumper to be consistent, just like Cook does, and Wagner does...but if two of the three find it...averaging 80 for this team will be a piece of cake.

I agree on Pemsl. And Wagner will be hard to keep on the bench too. He is tough and plays hard on D. Those FR are going to have to be awfully good to keep him out of the starting lineup.

Agree, he seems to have nice touch from anywhere on the floor, and can block shots and I enjoyed seeing all the dunks.
My only concerns are he doesn't seem to be playing against much competition. He looks like a giant playing with little kids. But I'm certainly excited to see what he can do.

May be concerning. Leonard from Illinois was the same way though. Went early to the NBA. Went to a Class 2A HS in a 4 class system.

IMO - i think slating any Frosh to start after the experience our front court received this season is a mistake. That's just my thoughts tho - i think both Garza and Nunge are going to play and contribute and maybe even start eventually - but it will take at least 3/4 of the season for either of them to overtake what's in front of them.

I don't think replacing Wagner in the starting lineup is that tall of a task.

I sent you a PM asking you to knock off the political crap. I'm adding it here in case you don't check your PMs. I won't ask you to stop again. It's a very basic and known rule around here. Take it somewhere else.

yet - he held onto that spot for most of the year even with good players behind him - Fran likes experience. I see Nunge and Garza coming on as the season progresses - mostly because Iowa won't need to rely on them early in the season like this years freshman class. I always get a kick out of Hawk fans that always think freshman are going to start over upper class guys right out of the gate - besides when there has been heavy turnover (last year and Woody and Mikes first season) that's never been the case with Fran. That's because he believes in development and the process they do IMO

There wasn't really a good option at the 5 besides Wagner or Pemsl. Fran tried Pemsl and it didn't work out really well so he went back to Wagner because there wasn't really another option. I'm not saying it's a done deal by any means. But it's not like they would have to replace a guy like Cook.

I agree but Garza did what he should in those situations. He dominated. He has been given a number of MVP awards at larger tournaments where he has been going up against much better competition. There does not seem to be a drop off in production when he plays big time games and bigger competition. I also hope that holds true in the move to college. Nothing is certain but I just see too many needs fulfilled with these two freshman.

I should have clarified that in my OP... I am not saying that this will be the lineup day one... I am saying that this will be the lineup once things get settled in around the start of the BIG season. I don't think anyone would argue that we were a undersized and mix and match type of team this year. One of my main factors was the more natural size and more complete games these two offer.

Fran is recruiting players who are more complete now...

examples...
woody defense a plus off. a minus
sapp defense a plus off. a negative
jok great offense no d
Uthoff great all around ability lacks killer instinct or big time confidence
Baer unbelievably hard worker very high BB IQ lacking in talent

The recruiting worm is turning and that is why I feel the Freshman will be starting a lot in the next few years.

Personally I'm not worried about either on the offensive end. But they have to be ready to play on the defensive end. If they can defend it will be very difficult to keep them off the court. But many freshmen need a year to "figure it out."
