2014 Official Hawkeye Baseball Thread

Hawks cruise today 12-3. Puts them at 24-15 on the season so far.

Three more big ten series. Iowa nearly had a spot in the conference tournament locked up.

I love the job Heller is doing. I went to the same small school as him( Cardinal), and even though we were much younger, me and my friends grew up to baseball stories about Rick. Just one of those guys that an entire community fell in love with. And he was coached by Gary Johnson, probably one of the best Iowa high school coaches around(I admit by bias though).

I have no doubt he's going to have tremendous recruiting success. He's just one of those guys who is high energy and very passionate about the sport, and high school players feed off that.

Game vs Milwaukee Tuesday was cancelled. 3rd game this season cancelled including @ Creighton and home vs Mt Mercy. Return to action this Saturday May 3rd for 3-game series @ OSU. The Hawkeyes (25-15) are currently 1 game ahead of the Buckeyes (25-20) in B1G standings

Hawks beat UIU last night to improve to 27-17. Last chance to see the Hawks at home is this weekend:

Iowa closes out its home slate with a three-game series Friday-Sunday against Illinois. Friday's series opener is slated for a 4 p.m. (CT) start, followed by 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. starts Saturday and Sunday.

Iowa got swept by 2nd Place Illinois over the weekend in IC 4-1 5-1, 4-2.
The Hawks need 1 victory this weekend @ Purdue to clinch the 8th and final spot in B1G Conference Tourney. Iowa could end the day tied for 7th/8th with MSU as they trail Nebraska 4-0 T4 as I type.

Iowa could move up to the 6th seed passing MSU and OSU. MSU plays Neb today then 3-games series vs PSU. OSU hosts NW 3-game series to finish the reg season. Iowa, MSU, and OSU play the bottom 3 schools in the standings.

It's pretty shocking how much better this team is with almost entirely the same roster. Offensively, they've become one of the conference's very best in nearly every statistical category after being one of the worst last year. And Mathews is quickly blossoming into one of the B1G's best young pitchers. Heller has done an absolutely outstanding job with this group; can't wait to see what he's got in store for the future.

Agreed, need to find a couple more power arms to go along with Mathews.

Now, just take two more from PUrdue and go into Omaha on a roll! Watched the Indiana/Minny game last night. Man, both teams' starting pitchers were dealing.

Iowa finishes tied for 7th with OSU, but by virtue of the Buckeyes series win taking 2 of 3, they earn the 7th seed and Iowa drops to 8th seed. Iowa will face #1 seed Indiana Wednesday at 5:00 in Omaha.

The Hoosiers, making their 11th all-time appearance in the Big Ten Tournament, claimed the No. 1 seed for the second straight season after going 21-3 in Big Ten play, making their .875 conference winning percentage the highest since Ohio State's .893 winning percentage (25-3) in 1999. Indiana opens play against No. 8 Iowa at 5 p.m. CT on Wednesday. The Hawkeyes ended the year with a 10-14 conference mark and earn their ninth Big Ten Tournament berth in program history.

I think Wednesday's contest may be live on BTN at 5:00?

The tournament's double-elimination format will culminate with a single championship game on Sunday, with the winner earning the tournament title and the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Championship. All eight teams will begin play in one of two brackets, with Indiana, Iowa, Michigan and Minnesota appearing in one bracket and Illinois, Michigan State, Nebraska and Ohio State appearing in the other bracket.

Four contests are scheduled on Wednesday and Thursday, with two games slated for Friday. Saturday will feature the winners of each bracket facing the remaining one-loss team from the opposite bracket in the semifinals. As many as four games are scheduled for Saturday, with the opportunity for two if necessary games to be played to determine Sunday's championship game participants.

BTN will provide live coverage during the Big Ten Tournament. The network will carry Games 3 and 4 on Wednesday, Games 6, 7 and 8 on Thursday, and each game on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

That is a brutal tournament having to play 4 to 6 games in 5 days. It is especially tough for bracket 2, the one Iowa is in, as the loser bracket has to play Friday night at 7:30 and the winner turns around and plays at 9 am the next morning.
