2 weeks to guess the new coaches

Here's DMRag's article and interview of Barta on the interviewing & other items, link: http://www.desmoinesregister.com/st...all-vs-minnesota-controversial-call/97707576/

Straying off topic just a bit. The article cited some cash flow issues. I thought this was very interesting.

  • Barta said a $2.92 million deficit his department ran in 2015-16 was anticipated and “was kind of a perfect storm in a negative way.”

The shortfall came about because ticket revenue declined about $1 million from the previous year, when the football team finished with a disappointing 7-6 record. That fall, the Hawkeyes ran off a 12-0 regular season record and reached the Rose Bowl, triggering bonuses for Ferentz and his staff, meaning Iowa spent $20.3 million in coaching salaries, benefits and bonuses in the fiscal year that ended in June 2016. That was $2.1 million more than the previous year.

The deficit was covered by the athletic department’s reserve fund, which Barta estimated sits between $8-9 million.

“(Iowa had) about a 17 percent drop in (football) season tickets and then an incredible season,” Barta said of 2015. “But you can’t recover all that revenue from ticket sales as the year goes on. And then paying those great bonuses because of the special season.”

As for the current fiscal year, Barta anticipates a balanced budget.

So, another site says Blazek was offered a job and turned it down. Rather disappointing if true. I mean, a former player turns us down to stay at mighty Rutgers?

I'm thinking timing is against us on this considering he just completed his first year with this new opportunity........may still feel some allegiance to those that gave him this first Power 5 opportunity. He'd only be moving sideways for another move to a position coach.

We could enact the Kansas strategy and give him a new title to put on his business card.........Associate Head Coach. Kansas gives their top recruiter and RB position coach a new title and more than doubles his salary to $400,000 from $150,000 to keep him aboard and keep the vultures away.

Broderick Binns' job is being advertised:

This could mean that he found another job and is leaving the program.

It also could mean that he is being promoted. For instance, Kelvin Bell takes over as DL coach, Reese Morgan returns to OL and Binns is the new recruiting coordinator/D-Line assistant, the position Bell currently holds. It might seem like a lateral move for Binns but it puts him on the field coaching, something his current position does not allow.

I hope you're right,Reese did a outstanding job with the OL.Might not get all of the coaches in place until they get back from their cruise.

Rob. Binns moving from director of player development to a recruiting cord. is a HUGE jump and is in no way shape or form only a lateral move. Right now his salary is $50,000 and, he would probably be getting over $175K-200K if he replaced Bell.

Maybe you meant Bell, as he is at $175K salary right now, but once again I would think he would get a healthy raise moving into a position coaching job. http://www.thegazette.com/subject/s...-recruiting-coordinator-role-at-iowa-20160229

Other than loyalty, I can't think of another argument Chris Ash could have used to get Blazek to stick around.

Thanks. I didn't realize the salaries were that much different. Even if they were the same, though, a chance to coach on the field would be attractive.

There's also a chance Barnes gets bumped up to coordinator and Binns takes over as director.

I think Brian Anderson is the next hire and Kelvin Bell will be elevated to DL and Reese moves back to OL.

I think Brian Anderson was interviewed, but won't get hired. It seems that Kelton Copeland of NIU is gaining some Iowa twitter followers.
