1987 Elite Eight Game Iowa vs UNLV

That game is easily the most crushing loss I have ever felt as a sports fan. I was 15 & was supposed to have basketball practice that evening and our coach called it off because we were all too depressed.

Arguably The single most disappointing day of my life. Which also means I have had a pretty blessed life ;). But still..I was crushed

Argh.. watching that rips my heart out all over again. It was no surprise that UNLV made a comeback in the 2nd half, but the Hawks couldn't buy a bucket for ages and UNLV couldn't miss. We really couldn't seem to slow down Gilliam at all.

A shot to win with that last possession ends with a lob pass off the side of the backboard.. Painful.

Will we ever see another Iowa team as good as this particular squad?

Excellent find, Judagor, that was one of the best Hawkeye teams ever, if not the best. We should have been National Champions that year. Heartbreaking loss. I was at that game. We were cheering wildly among the Rebel fans in front of us. When they finally went ahead in the second half one of them stood up, pointed at us and screamed something foul at us. That was my favorite Iowa team. Makes one long for the glory of the past. Under Fran's leadership, we very well could come back, in time. His style of play is very similar. Woodbury could be the start of something big.

Unfortunately the other Hawkeye game they feature is the Northwestern State loss that was the end of the Alford era.

It still is enjoyable to watch the game to see just how good that team was.

College and NBA hoops may be the only sports that have gotten worse in the last 25 years. The 1987 Iowa team is as good or better as any college teams I have seen in the past 15, for sure...97 KU team was pretty good...will give them that, as were Laettner Duke teams.

I wish I could have some input on college hoops in the 80's, but I would of only been 3. So I'll just have to take your word for it, grandpa...

The college game right now is NOWHERE near where it was in the 1980's. Not even close.

Have to agree. I feel pretty sure that the best teams from the 80's (UNC, G'Town, etc.) would mop the floor with today's best teams.

The mid-range game seems totally gone. College hoops these days is basically a 3 point shooting contest.

That 1987 Iowa team didn't seem to shoot many threes at all.. I can remember only two makes from that video, and not that many more attempts. They tried mostly to get the ball inside, get to the FT line, or convert in transition or off the press.

Yes, I have become 'Get out of my lawn!' guy before my own eyes it would seem.

The game in the 1980's was wide open..the Big Ten was amazing..especially in the middle four or so years of the decade.

I really think Chuck Daly's Pistons are largely to blame...before that brand of basketball, it was showtime in the NBA and the college game was wide open....after they won a couple titles, playing thug ball (as in physical, beat people up stuff) it changed the entire sport...and it trickled down to the college level too...

And the college level was decimated by early NBA entries in the mid to late 1990's and up through until a few years back...its not as bad as it was, but it's still detrimental to the college game being as good as it can be.

the NBA is better now than it has ever been. that includes the magic and bird era, as well as the mj era.

I agree with Duff. Just because they didn't play defense in the eighties doesn't mean I was better basketball. The Pistons didn't ruin the NBA either. They played within the rules that the comish laid before every other team and they excelled at it. The final scores in the eighties were ridiculous and that brought a new era of defensive-minded rules that have been adjusted since then. Today, we have a better athlete and better training that makes strategy even more important.

I disagree. The players are better conditioned so the game moves faster as they move faster. 1-on-1 skills are more impressive.

But, the team play has dropped. Take out the Euro guys and you're left with the products of the AAU generation.

Players are more athletic, but their games have become narrower and narrower.

It's easy to see why...

Too many 1 and Dones. It hurts both the NCAA and NBA.
The NCAA doesn't get to keep the high talents in their sport, thus diminishing the overall talent. The NBA gets the high talents when they are only 19 years old and aren't ready for the NBA yet, thus diminishing the overall talent.
