10-14 football coach gets $22.5 Million!

When you look at every coach in America getting raises and extensions, then the failures get buyouts and schools even paying multiple buyouts, and the natural inflation of everything, its not that crazy.

Smart for Campbell to get his money. It would look bad if he left ISU after just2 years.

$22.5M over 6 years is $3.75M per year. Probably worth sticking around for.

Supply and demand...it is a club...with lots of coin $$$$ for the astute dealers...

Sports...the new religion...players and coaches are god-like performers...

If you are talented it works as a coach...if you are sly and a snake oil salesman it works...

Shoot, if you win, and the fans are happy and make money...you can even be a pedophile in the team shower...and get away with it...

The system is set up for dishonesty and cheating...a game with posted "rules" but lots of winks...don't want to ruin the party.

And...Iowa needs an elite PG and elite OC

Was listening to ESPN radio yesterday. They said the Chip Kelly had signed over $100 Million in contracts over the past 10 years.

Wow

Well, when there is only 65 of those jobs (Power 5 head football coach) in the entire country, in an industry that makes billions in revenue, supply and demand dictate that those guys are going to get paid....

Iowa State was able to lock him up for the near future anyway. Didn't know if he would dart. Looking promising out west. At least it will make the Iowa vs Iowa State game a bit more meaningful for both teams going forward.

Because IA State was able to lock him up for a few more years. Could have implications on in-state recruiting, and maybe some out-of-state.

That's a different issue than what the OP is trying to present, he's suggesting the W/L record doesn't warrant his salary.

That's the thing though, the extension didn't "lock him up" any more than he was already locked up. He still has the same exact buyout he previously had...it scales down each year. So Pollard basically just threw more money in his face without getting anything in return. I don't get it at all, but I didn't go to the Gary Barta School of Contract Negotiations.

Matt Campbell, with his 10-14 record at Iowa State, makes just $1M less per year than Kirk Ferentz, and probably 80% of posters on HN think KF is vastly overpaid. Let that sink in for a second

Sandusky wasn't the coach. Let's not let our (well-placed) anger distort the facts.

Franny Mac got a new contract after 2 years and a losing record. Of course, this probably proves the OP's point more than anything else on here.

I think the idea is keep him motivated and don't make him bitter so that he leaves when his buyout is lower, no matter what ISU is offereing at that time.

I know, I know, $2M a year should already be enough motivation, but when you know other schools are willing to pay more, maybe its better to just pay his fair market value now so he will have faith that later ISU will be fair in the future and not be angry that he is "stuck".

Of course ISU could go back to 2-10 every year, so its a risk.

Yea agree. They are never totally "locked up" but it's a guaranteed payout.
