I think if we ever went to a spread like Missery played I would have to pull up camp. I know thats not what we are about and it wont happen, but I swear if it ever does, see ya. I love power run, strong D football, not trying to run trick plays and such.
To be honest when no one was in Missery's backfield except the qb it kind of made me think thats how girls would play the game and I know some girls who would still have more of a run game than they had.
I know it worked out for us well, because if they could have moved it on the ground I think they would have won it.

I don't like the spread either but it is a nice way to attain a bunch of athletes and get them all on the field at the same time. I could never watch a Hawkeye team throw the ball 57 times, drags the game on.

Spread offenses go along with the wussification of football. I thought football was a physically demanding game that was legal violence but teams like that show that it isn't legal violence but now it has become a finesse game. I hope Iowa stays like that old school football that I love...POWER Run and Playaction with solid defense

Don't take this the wrong way, but don't you think that's a little shallow? An offensive philosophy change would cause you complete upheaval in your rooting interests? And if Missouri wasn't having so much success through the air, they probably would've run more (or maybe they were just stubborn). Guys not named Gabbert (sacks counted as negative rushing yards) ran the ball 16 times for 85 yards, which is a little over 5.3 yards per crack. Just for the record, I say this as a huge spread fan. To me it's not a gimmick offense like some like to portray; did Missouri really try to run trick plays? They went unbalanced one time, and the only thing unusual was that they motioned a tackle out wide. But we didn't cover the eligible TE, so that was a very successful play for them.

I can't even really think of something that would make me think that I'd stop rooting for the Hawkeyes...and ANTI-Hawk, as in what would make me root against them? I don't know if I'll ever come up with a reason for that...

I like your moves, I like your style. That said I just could not bring myself to root for a team that plays that way. I think I would rather watch tennis.

The spread is not my cup of tea, but I would not give up on the Hawks. I would hate watching that style week after week.

I agree I couldn't stop being a hawk because of style...Just like I didn't stop being a hawkeye because I disliked Alford or disliked Lickliter's style. But a spread offense would be annoying to watch since it is so finesse and not Midwest or Blue-collar.

There are times that you can come here and there are multiple posts complaining about Iowa's offensive style. Nature of the beast. If Iowa won 12 games running the spread everybody would be fine with it.

This. I have trouble coming up with anything that would make me quit rooting for the Hawks much less start rooting against them.

Maybe if Iowa were to hire Urban Meyer as head coach with Bo Pelini as DC and Charlie Weiss as OC and start having Cam Newton and DJK type drama year in and year out I would wear less Hawkeye gear, not cheer as loud/proud. Even then I would have trouble rooting AGAINST them. So basically it isn't going to happen.

Maybe if we were to move to Ames and change our nickname to the Cyclones, but can't think of anything that would make me anti hawk. WHen it comes to basketball, it could be bringing back lick, but that already happened and somehow I found myself a fan again.

The issues isn't the spread offense...the issue I have is the way Iowa chooses to defend it. You can't give "great" quarterbacks time to beat you. Gabbert had all day to throw and we didn't go to 5 or 6 db's until late in the game. I would have liked to see us man up on the receivers without help, and send six guys on every play with disguising the blitz packages. Let's see what happens to his completion percentage. The issue then becomes can Iowa score enough to overcome a few big plays that may result. There you have it...this is why we don't play defense like that. Our offense is less than explosive.

RS just didn't impress in the second half of the season. That was the difference between 8-5 and 11-2. He wasn't good enough on third down.

The spread isn't a gimmick. The Wildcat is a gimmick. The spread is just the latest craze, like the Wishbone, Wing T, Veer, Fun and Gun, and Triple Option before it. Eventually defenses will figure it out, and something new will come along.

I stopped becoming a Hawkeye football fan in 1923, when they first averaged over 5 passes a game. This is just a gimmick phase that will soon go out of style.

I stopped following Hawkeye basketball in 1947, when the majority of the team was caught up in the "look at me now" phase of the jump shot. The set shot will come back around soon, then I'll be back on the bandwagon.

Don't get me started on the wrestlers wearing clothes. In ancient Greece, they were naked like God intended.

What courses through my veins and arteries is black & gold.
NOTHING can or would EVER make me turn against my Alma Mater.

It would be tough for me to turn on Iowa.

As far as running the spread, I don't prefer it and at some point I honestly believe there will be a backlash against it because it doesn't prepare you well for the NFL.

I still believe the best recipe for success is to run a prostyle offense, west coast style. Quick slants, skinny posts, quick outs, etc.

On defense, prostyle too, run an aggressive style blitz and make the QB make quick decisions.

Doesn't this make you a fair weather fan? Or possibly a bandwagon fan?

Even worse: it makes him sound like a 'clone.

Hey now, that kind of talk is'nt nessessary. I don't know I relate it to this.
How many of you used to respect and maybe even watch NU? How many still do? After they got away from thier roots and tried a diff offence they have been less of a power house and face it they lost games causing them to lose fans.
I guess I shoudnt have said anti hawk, I would'nt root against them, but it would not be my top priority to watch the games either.
