1.4 million to Jane (I assume Tracey will now get a check instead of a trial)

If this trial is not in Polk County then it is a different verdict. Newkirk has owned the state of Iowa in a number of employment cases brought before juries in Polk County. The issue was Barta did not employ a disciplinary system. Reprimands should have been written for each instance of her insubordination and her inadequate level of performance. If anything Barta was too nice this woman. It was cheaper to go to trial than settle out of court .

Now Meyers is going to sue for another 2 million and her lawyers want an investigation into the Iowa athletic dept, plus they still have to deal with Griesbaum's case. This is not good at all for the University of Iowa. If they lose all three cases, it's gonna look really, really bad. Yeah, someone will probably get fired, and I bet this is exactly what Meyers and Griesbaum want. Barta ended their careers at Iowa, now they are trying to turn the table and end his. This is revenge.
Good I hope they can his ass. Can't discriminate, period. Sorry but 8 folks who have way more info on this stuff then us message board quarterbacks made a pretty quick decision on all five counts. Let's flush the toilet on bad deal barta already.

He didn't discriminate against them. That just sounds nice when you're looking for a handout. I hope these two awful women are never heard from again.

Apparently he did something. Must suck to live a life where you have so much hate for people.

Agreed. Hate from Meyer seems to be the main issue driving this whole thing. She hated that her partner got fired, and she hated that she got reassigned because she wasn't good at her job.

No worries everybody. I will assume the role of AD for the University of Iowa and I will work at half of Barta's salary. The cost savings should help offset the financial impact of these lawsuits. I will proactively and vigorously attempt to renegotiate new contracts for all of the marquee athletic program coaches imploring upon their sense of loyalty and levels of commitment and sacrifice to help the University stave off potential pitfalls as ramifications of the ongoing litigation. I will work for a new apparel and uniforms contract with Under Armour. This will of course mean new and re-imagined uniforms bringing back our classic uniform for special occasions and some rivalry games. I will scrap the North End zone project in favor of using those appropriated funds to be reallocated for the construction of a palatial housing project that will provide upscale state of the art housing for all student athletes. Think Olympic Village but grandiose. Something that will really draw in top flight young prospects to our University. This way effectively making it much easier to monitor and mentor our student athletes on conduct and decorum. I will bring energy to a rather stiff administration favoring ideas that are fresh and bold. Now I just need to find a damned application to apply.

Not according to a lawyer that handles these types of cases.
Out of curiosity, what's the determining factor on how an attorney gets paid for civil cases? Is it up to them, or is there a standard in the industry? I've never sued anyone nor been sued, so I'm genuinely curious.

Just wondering what would be the point where a lawyer would say it will be on a contingency percentage vs, an hourly rate + expenses. I assume it depends on whether the law allows recovering legal fees for a specific type of case, and which option an attorney feels is likely to net the most at the end?

Good thing Iowa's classy enough not to listen to dumb advice.

Middle aged men covering themselves head to toe in Under Armour douche costumes are equivalent to the Addidas track suit-wearing yuppies of the 90's.

You might as well wear a sign that says, "I can't afford my wife and my son's name is Brody."

He said the plaintiff's attorneys submit the billable hours to the judge and the judge makes the ruling on the amount to be paid by defendant.

I don't think he discriminated. Jane Meyer by all accounts was impossible to work with.

Barta's guilt in this whole thing was being too stupid and nutless to fire her right away like he should have.

That's why he needs to get fired.

If Barta steps down, Iowa should give a blank check to Barry Alvarez to be the next AD, simply to watch the Wisco fan base lose their minds.

It is simple Barta is a tool for never documenting anything at all, he is showing how incompetent he is, or at worst how bad he is at discrimination..

Ummm...where is the HR department. Everyone knew about Jane...they are the one's responsible for documentation and the overall direction in handling this case...if Iowa is paying...they didn't do their job well either.

I think it's probably safe to say that Gary won't be working at the University of Iowa much longer.

I would place a large bet he will be. There was nothing blatant. 3 men and 5 women decided the case that knew nothing of the workings of this department. Would be like you or me off the street. Lesson to learn is to document issues with employees and fire them sooner than what Barta did for performance issues. The only big issue I saw is when he hired Gene Taylor and paid him significantly more starting out. That I would like to see a really good explanation for from Barta. I am guessing most all in that department think 1.4 mill was a small price to pay to be rid of her. Sports talk again reiterated last night she is not a nice person and treated the media terribly and I think we would all say part of her job is PR related. She can take what remains after lawyers and taxes eat a big chunk of her pay out. Barta will remain.
