This is good... My feeling when I watch the hawks is that they're just too tight. Everything short. No pop. Need to open things up and get the ball vertical.
I've been saying this for years, but agree 100%. Iowa has to spread the opponent D vertically in order to open up the run game. If not, it will be a long season.
Only thing after this game is I'd like to see the O go deep and up top more... just to keep the D honest. That short sideways stuff is generally a waste, and if they keep everything short, the opponent just brings everybody up and the Hawks will struggle all year to move the ball.
I'll second that.
Over the years my frustration has been the inability to recruit top skill talent. Always seem to get "2nd tier" talent - especially at WR. RB & QB we recruit okay, but not great.
Oh please... our admissions standards aren't THAT tough.
Stanford's admission standards make Iowa's look like it's a juco. They get plenty of talent. So does ND.
KF's biggest failing is as a recruiter. He doesn't get the athletes that he should.
The coaches are similar (at least Davis and KF) in that neither can recruit but both are great people and good teachers of their respective sports.
Both are admirable and have accomplished great things.
Neither can (or could have) take us to the promised land.
55 points vs USC late in 4th quarter. Wow.
KF should forget about opponent film and watch a little Oregon offense film. Might learn something.
Needless to say, if Oregon has a grad assistant, KF should hire HIM to run the offense next year.
I was chewing this stuff 15 years ago when it first came out. Glad to see the guy (or company) is finally getting big enough to do TV and such. Good for him!
Took a while, but got there.
Bullcrap... I would bet Brian Kelly, Urban Meyer and a few others could.
And what's so darn appealing about Eugene, OR? Seems they recruit quite a bit of talent there. And they run one hell of an offense.
Another example...
ND: Not relevant for a long time now, but Brian Kelly comes in and this team has done a 180 almost overnight.
It's obviously both talent and coaching, but sometimes I think we underestimate the importance of the coaching and system put in place by the coaches.
I don't think Iowa Is "full of NFL talent"... however we have a few NFL players each year on average.
My belief is that KF is a GREAT teacher of football fundamentals, but is average in the areas of recruiting, game management, play calling, play design. That's my guess anyway.
I'm no expert, but I look at certain programs and just scratch my head...
Hawkeyes: Coach that has done amazing things with generally pretty average B10 talent. Always competitive. Almost never blown out. This year... WTH?!
K-State: 100 year old coach & just dominating.
Georgia Tech...
Not only are we (at best) an average B10 teams in terms of talent, but now our coaching has suddenly taken a turn.
Maybe KF needs to go the NFL Asst Coach route and we get some new young blood in IC?
My biggest beef with this team (and KF) is the unwillingness to throw the ball down the field...
