A lot of citizen golfers dream of playing the same courses on which majors and other big tournaments are held. But looking at this British Open course and how perilous it is, would you really want to play it? Consider how humiliating it would be for you, and the cost, and pls answer honestly.

Oh hell no. I've had nightmares where I shot over 200. I don't want that to be a reality.

How much do you think it would cost to play there....when you figure travel and everything else in?

I would love to play it. I am sure there would be some holes where to keep the pace of play up if I hit a couple of bad shots I may have to just pick up. nothign wrong with that. but if the weather was ok and an 18 handicapper was hitting it ok I see them only scoring about 120. I am below an 18 handicapper but I could handle 110 on that course.

Reminds me of a sports illustrated story about st andrews and the history of golf when a US vacationer played the course and after 6 holes sent his caddy back to the clubhouse for 2 dozen more golf balls and more beer.

Figure $800-$1000 for round-trip airfare from the US east coast to London.
Ground transportation $250.
Probably $300/night lodging.
Food/drink $100/day.
Souvenirs $200.
18 holes is $258 weekday, $386 Saturday.
Green Fees

It'd be a wicked costly trip that only Big Shooters like ok4p and AHawk1 could afford. :D

Priceless!!! thanks for the mastercard commercials :)

Would love to do it. When I win the lottery I will travel the world playing all the courses and will shoot 150 on each one.

Well I'll still go but for that kind of money I'm not taking any **** from any gray hairs.

I would like to play any course on which a major is held. If you like golf, why wouldn't you?

Heck, I'd settle for walking a lot of the courses without even playing them.

I like that idea. I would just like to walk the course. If I played a course like that I would lose so many balls that it would just be ridiculous. I mean hitting into the rough at my local muni is one thing. But hooking a ball into the fescue over there means crawling around on your hands and knees in 3 foot high grass and prolly never finding it. Never mind the high wind, low temps, and driving rain. (where were they this year?)

If I were wealthy, sure I'd take a 5 gallon bucket of balls, a caddie, 2 fore-caddies and go play. As a prole, no. Rather just walk the course, check out the bunkers, maybe hunt the fescue for one of Phil's balls. :D

Something I want to do before I die is travel to Scotland/England and play some Open courses. I think it would be awesome, as I'm a huge fan of links style courses and just the history associated with it. Plus I'd like to enjoy a few pints in some local pubs :)

One thing you have to realize is that these major tournament courses are set up differently for professional tournaments, especially majors. Greens are firmer and faster. Fairways are narrower. Rough is deeper. Tee boxes maximize distances on each hole. Courses are set up much easier for us mere mortals.

I've been blessed to play at a number of these courses in my lifetime, breaking 80 at St Andrews, Pebble Beach, and Torrey Pines. I'm just a 3 hcp, so I'm a good but not great player. These courses are so much easier for those of us paying green fees. Wide fairways. No real rough. Soft greens.

I'd like to think that I could break 90 when the courses are set up for the pros, but that's probably just a pipe dream. Today's professional are so much better that us.

If you do have the opportunity and means to play one of the courses, do it. You will truly count it as one of the great experiences of your life.
