How will Iowa defend against the 7 footers on indiana and illinois?

We have 15 fouls to use up with Brommer, Archie and Olaseni. Just play MSU and Purdue defense on their bigs and make them earn their buckets. Both are excellent passers, which worries more than their size. We collapse and they kick it out to their perimeter guys and it could get ugly. We just have to keep McCabe and Basabe from getting into foul trouble or we are hosed on the boards.

The point of the thread is we need the interior defense at times against bigger teams.

We don't have much of that. So we need alternatives. Yes Archie is strong defensively, but that is just giving up waaaay too much on the offensive end.

The best way to stop them is to have their teammates forget about them inside like Michigan did with Morgan at CHA. Both teams have had a history with that this season. I will let Paul from Ill. launch all game long.

Switch defenses often. Zone them as much as we can get away with. Leonard and Zeller are good enough to pass out of it if we stay in it long, tho.

The odds of upsetting IU and Illini at their gyms is not good anyway. Penn St was physical with Leonard at PSU and got away with it. In Champaign,he probably gets the call.
The good news? I think Leonard will be going to the NBA in the draft this June. This kid's family needs financial help and the NBA loves his potential.

Could try to go small with McCabe on them if we are in a zone and make them chase him to the perimeter on defense. Run the ball. And pray for a bad shooting nite from the arc for their teammates.

This.

A strong 2-3 Zone would be the best bet. Keep Archie and Basabe in the middle of the Zone (and pray they don't foul out in the first half). Indiana is a good 3 point shooting team, so Zone would be best against them regardless.

I believe that a big key to iowa pulling off upsets against these teams with scoring 7 footers is going to be getting Archie in the game to defend them. He's done a great job defensively all year and I respect him for accepting that role. Basabe is a good shot blocker as a help defender but Archie is the only guy on the team that can square you up and stuff you and we'll need that on Leonard and Zeller. Archie shut down Sampson III this year and I remember last year he completely shut down JaJuan Johnson. That's really Impressive and we'll need him to continue doing his thing blocking shots and rebounding as he is the only true center we have that can affect a game defensively (brommer is too soft and we haven't seen much of Gabe)

Didn't read all the posts in between, but we beat MN more because of the zone defense - then Archie (although he did a decent job on Sampson) and they couldn't hit the broad side of the barn from 3-pt land.

possible rotate archie, brommer, stroke and we need more chairslamming to lit up the fire under their ***
use mccabe for taking charges
