The Big 12 is Dead

I know it's been said many times, and even looked like it was saved last week, but all the signs are bad. Usually there are a bunch of rumors about Oklahoma or Texas or somebody leaving but someone comes out with a conflicting report. Not this time. All the talking heads say Oklahoma is gone, SEC came out and said they think they can get A&M in by the 12-13 season. It looks very very bad for the Big 12. So the obvious question is, what happens to the Clones, and does this put the Cy-Hawk series in jeopardy?

I should add that this could all change at any time. I had to cover myself because we all saw what happened last summer. But if I had to put money on it, the Big 12 is gone.

I say let em in the big10.:D

No thanks :) I was thinking more MAC or best case scenerio the Big East. I wonder if all of Baylor's crying will get them taken care of though. Meaning, I wonder if because they threatened to sue, and they have Ken Starr, someone was able to pull a few strings to get them into the Big East to shut them up. If that happened, ISU would be left out in the cold. Just a theory, and probably a stupid one at that.

I love how message board posters throw around the MAC and MWC like these conferences have ever come out and said anything about wanting to re-structure themselves in regards to a Big 12 collapse. "I'm a fan of a middle of the road Big Ten team, I look down on mid-major conferences even though we lose to their teams once in awhile. But they aren't on TV so I can talk about them like I actually know what is happening or I am the commissioner of one of these conferences."

So you are saying that the MAC wouldn't be happy to take a former Big 12 team? You are right, I have no idea what mid-major conference would or would not take them, but SOMEBODY would. And how many times have we lost to a mid-major in the last 10 years? Western Michigan, in 2007, who else??? So yes we get more exposure, generally beat those teams, and it is better to be in the Big 10, even during the years we are "middle of the road." Remember we have finished in the top 10 in the country a few times over the past 10 years.

I'll admit. I would love to see ISU win the Big 12 atleast once before it is laid to rest. Imagine if ISU surprised everyone this year and next by actually having an overall good season. I wonder what story lines would come out if ISU won the Big 12 it's final year. Kind of a consolation prize for being part of a doomed conference.

I've been following realignment with a lot of interest. I think each conference may be different when it comes to the number of members. Right now I do not think it makes sense for the Big 10 to expand unless Notre Dame would asks in. Even at that point I don't think it makes sense to go beyond 14 teams. I could see a schedule of 6 division games and 4 opposite division games and just two out of conference. You have one rival opponent from the other division.

The SEC looks like 14 teams is the first goal, A&M and ??????. It will either be another Big 12 team or one from the Big East or ACC. I don't think the PAC would pass on Oklahoma. Just too great a football program to pass up. The rumor that Texas officials met with Okie on Sunday means there is smoke. Texas is trying to hang on to its power now. I think it's too late.

The Big 12 will be left with Texas, Tech, Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State and Baylor. It is still possible for the conference to add three schools, but when the BCS contract is up in 2014 the conference could lose its automatic qualifier status. It would be difficult to get BCS points in the polls with A&M, and the Okie's gone.

The Big East is in the best position to add teams. They could add three and go to 12 and 20 for BBall. A fourth opening could occur if the Big is raided for one team. Since the Big East has a number of schools with religious foundations it will not be a detriment for Baylor. I honestly think Baylor is trying to insure a place in the Big East for itself.

I think Missouri and the two Kansas schools are high on the big east list should the conference dissolve. That doesn't leave many options for ISU. In the game of musical chairs they are not in an enviable position.

I don't think the cyhawk would go away. The bitten is moving to a 9 game conf schedule, so Iowa needs to schedule three MAC teams or their like in the OOC.

In all seriousness, if ISU does have to go 'down' in conference prestige to a nonAQ, I don't know that u can continue the home and home aspect of the series

You truly desire for ISU to be relegated to a non BCS school dont you? I am surprised you didnt start the car and close the garage door after Saturday honestly.

Take it easy, he just said he thought the Clones would land in the BCS. Each fan base makes jokes at the expense of the other one once in a while

I agree. And I'm not just saying that because the Hawks just lost in Ames
