Positives about the game?

First off I'm no expert and feel free to add in anything, but lets keep this positive. Hoping for another 2002 here.

I liked the four wide receiver sets, seems like we have three descent WR's, Davis definitely had some good plays.

Vandy looked rattled but it looks like he has been working on his throws over the linebackers, still floating them but better than the darts that we saw against OSU in 2009.

Meyer is one hell of a FG kicker, excited to see what becomes of him as far as NFL talent.

I see a lot of potential, but there are some definate problems. The offense can probably fix their problems this year.
The defense is too light, and lacks experiance and fundementals. The experiance will build with every game as will the fundementals but the lack of size is going to be tough to over come against B10 offensive linemen.
The kicking was a highlight. On the other hand the kick off coverage team gave up a lot more yardage than they should have. ISU's field position did Iowa's struggling defense no favors.

Well, obviously run blocking was a positive. We blocked well against 8 and 9 man fronts.

Pass blocking was not bad. For the most part, Vandy had time to make plays.

Both Vandy and Coker were tentative early, but It seemed like they gained confidence as the game went on. Hopefully, that will serve us well.

Myers is solid on FG and the kick-offs weren't too bad.

We have good speed on defense and the initial coverage was good. If we can somehow get pressure from the d-line, this defense could be very good against the pass.

We had a lot of missed tackles and mental errors (over-pursuit, abandoning lanes, etc). Those are fixable. More experience and discipline will go a long way toward fixing this defense.

Most of our issues are simply from being a young team and those will get fixed over time.

I came out of this game with 3 major concerns:

1) Toughness - with the exception of Davis, McNutt, Law, and Prater, the players seemed almost afraid of any real contact. They just weren't very physical and got physically dominated most of the game.

2) The D-line - They not only got beaten, they were flat out dominated. The ISU o-line bullied them and was consistently getting blocks on our linebackers. And they looked almost bored doing so - like it was no effort at all. We really, really need something to happen here or our defense is never going to be able to stop anyone.

3) Coaching - Our coaches really didn't do our young players any favors. Our WR's had a huge advantage over the ISU DB's. It seems like we could have really helped Vandy out early be setting him up for short, easy passes to to our WR's and TE's. Why don't we use slants? On defense, it is entirely possible to blitz the LB's or safeties outside of the shadow of our own endzone.

Anyway, I think there were certainly some positives, but this is looking like it is going to be a long year...

One potentially helpful thing was simply that a lot of weaknesses have been exposed early. We've had years in the past where we've looked strong in non-conference, only to get surprised in the B10. Hope the coaching staff hasn't gotten too set in its ways.

And by a 340lb lineman with a bad ankle. The guy could barely move.

Positives? Hum! Positive Iowa will play conservative and not utilize their talents. Positive that the D won't stop any kind of a threat. Positive, with the game on the line and a 4th and 1 that KF will opt for a field goal even though they wouldn't be able to contain Jantz and the clones. You skip ahead 5 years and play the same game and the outcome would be the same. We have the worst play calling OC, a tired defense, and a coach that has beebees for balls.

Yeah - no doubt. Really surprised that we could use speed moves to get around him and get some pressure. He barely had any lateral movement at all...

The short passes are good to get confidence/timing down early. But Iowa didn't really start moving the ball until they started to throw the football downfield more.

I like Iowa's OL, thought they controlled things well, ISU did throw a few blitzes that got there but Vandy was able to step up and get positive yards a few times.

4 WR sets and quick 5 yard throws are good.

Vandy rebounded from the 2nd & 3rd quarters and gave Iowa a chance to win.

I really think if Vandy and our receivers were "cut loose", this could be an exciting team to watch and tough to stop.
