Hot off the press...pre-camp two deeps...

The offensive line starters look like a load...and their backups are not chopped liver, either. This might be of the 'deepest' offensive lines of the Ferentz era in the form of most players capable of being solid contributors. This offense has the chance to score 30 a game, and this line is going to be the key.

On defense, it's going to be a fascinating first few games. This is the least experience Iowa has had in it's DL two deep since 2005 when it started freshmen Mitch King and Matt Kroul at tackle and sophomores Ken Iwebema and Bryan Mattison at end. I remain cautiously optimistic about what they can do (it's better than being cautiously pessimistic), and the rotation is going to expand from what we have seen the past few years. Dominic Alvis is someone Norm Parker has been raving about for the past 18 months...his inclusion here makes sense along those lines. Another 'motor' guy on the defensive line.

Hyde starts the fall two-deep where he ended the spring; at free safety. I think a green free safety can cause more damage for Iowa's defense than a green corner, so its good ot have Hyde's defensive back experience at safety. Iowa rarely asks its corners to play man coverage, so they usually have safety help over the top. They may be able to let Shaun Prater play a little man coverage this year, given his experience, and shade Hyde over to Castillo's side a bit.

I like the fact that White is listed as number 2 on the depth chart. IMO it means that Kirk is actually waiting to see what Johnson and the newbies bring to the table before automatically making his mind up. Honestly, I think that Johnson and the newbies will work their way past White, however, I think if White remains #2 I don't think he would be a liability out there and could be a valuable backup.

Kirk has done this forever...and this two deep is written not just in pencil, but in crayon ;)

No mention of the LB's? I feel our defense has been at it's weakest when the linebackers are inexperienced or injured. Similar to last year. I'm hoping for tremendous strides in this area. I want to see domination from our linebackers. I'm only casutiously optimistic that it will happen though.

I think Morris will be exponentially better than a year ago.and Nielsen is the second best LEO of the KF era. Kirksey is not anything like what we have seen at the WILL in the past, however this LB corp may be among the fastest we have seen in the KF era. Kirksey is 6-2-215. His speed will help his cover skills...we'll see how his frame holds up and how physical he can be

The Paki Bomb was listed at #1 for about 3 years in a row in the pre-camp 2 deeps. Look for McCall to be the #2 about 2 games into the season.

Agreed, but I still have a gut feeling that it will be Johnson that fills the #2 with McCall right behind him.

I'm just glad to see Brad Rogers being listed. I don't really expect to see him in action this year, but at least his name is on there. That kinda is a good sign in my eyes.

The defensive line situation is light years from 2005.

Binns is an experienced starter. Daniels was at least a part time starter last year. Daniel has a bunch of quality game reps, and Alvis was recording stats until he got injured last year and it is his third Summer camp.

Seriously, it's not even close to 2005.

I'm most concerned about Castillo's CB spot. Last year he was light years better than his RS frosh season, so hopefully he makes more strides...but I can't help but have flashbacks of Adam Shada out there. I was really hoping to see BJ Lowery and Bernstine crack the top 4, but you have to trust the coaches at some point.

Along the OL, it also seems Nolan Mac is healthy, which is a great sign. The depth is also fantastic, as there is quite a bit of athleticism to go along w/ the size.

I'm a little surprised at the DL, namely Alvis, but I think there will be a lot of rotation occurring, which I wish the staff would have done the past few years.

As for RB, I'm more than fine w/ Jason White as the #2. I believe he's better than both Paki and Sam Brownlee, and I think w/ that OL in front of him, he'd be fine. I also genuinely question anybody that automatically assumes a frosh will step on campus and quickly become the #2. I know Ferentz has a history of playing frosh at RB, but they always have to earn it (unless unexpected attrition occurs, AIRBHG be damned). I think anybody assuming McCall gets to the #2 spot by the TN Tech is giving an extremely premature prognostication. Also, very glad to see Brad Rogers is even listed. It would've been a shame (though the correct decision) if his health wouldn't allow him to continue his career.

I would agree for the most part..

2005 had 4 new starters. This year we have Daniels, who started some games last year and played as many snaps as any DL last year. And Binns, who has started 18 games or so in his career. Lebron Daniel is a senior getting his first extensive action, and then Alvis. Much more physically mature group this year, with 3 seniors and a sophomore starting.

I'm just thrilled they're finally releasing pre-camp two deep. Soon we can drop the "pre-camp" because football seasons almost here.

I agree, it seems like all the pundits think since someone wasn't a "starter" the previous year that they suck. We have guys with experience, it's not like Kirk is depending on a bunch of true freshman.
