wow - time to do mock drafts and post them on hawkeyenation.com.

Deace can respond for himself, but it seems to me that doing a mock draft is a pretty good way to get people to visit his website.
Also seems a little bit ironic that someone with 3,000+ posts would imply that someone else has too much free time.

I would prefer a cover corner to replace McFadden or anybody to replace Gay at the nickel.
Starks/Colon are both coming back along with Pouncey should make a decent OL. I would rather they sign Gallery via FA than draft someone ,however, Deace is right they will probably go OL.

I find myself agreeing with you a lot lately. But you are right - I hate taking a QB #1. Bradford, IMO, was a rare exception. They can set your franchise back 5-8 years. It took the Niners about 5 years to see any semblance of a light after drafting that kid out of Utah, and they are still bad. Raiders, Browns, and Bengals have also had the same fate (among many other faults, I know).
Several disagreements with Deace, including:
1. AJ Green will be selected before Julio Jones.
2. Someone will take a chance on Mallett in round 1.
3. I wonder if the Panthers will take a QB with the first pick, let alone a QB that has virtually no experience taking snaps under center. Rookie QB's are successful when they are able to take full advantage of training camp. With the lockout, that is not going to happen. Newton will ultimately be a franchise type player, but he will not be ready his first year. I have to believe that Carolina will try their best to trade out of the #1 spot.

They made the Super Bowl with Jake Delhomme at QB. They rode their running game and defense when they were good. Clausen isn't the answer, either. But they can set themselves up for success in the future by getting back to power football. Shore up the O-line, and either get a better value QB later in the draft, or wait until next year. None of the top 4 look to be a good investment at #1. They're better off waiting for a better QB prospect.

I've never understood the desire for teams to draft QBs, overpay them and then let them 'learn' for a yr or two before they see the field. Even the best QB can't throw the ball without a solid OLine or legit WRs that can get open and actually catch the ball. There are certainly exceptions to the rule like Manning and Brady but the majority of NFL QBs rely on the other 10 players on the field.
Build the OLine and then add QB/WR/RB to the package.

I agree with you on not drafting a QB with the #1 overall pick, but I still think they should give Claussen a chance which I hate hearing myself say that because I'm a Claussen and ND hater. But I dont think there is an OL worth drafting #1 either. This really isnt the draft to have a top 5 pick. I think they should trade down a couple spots and pick up some more picks along the way.

This. It's very difficult to win a Super Bowl without a franchise QB (there are exceptions, typically when the defense is out of this world good), but I've felt that the franchise QB is the FINAL piece of the puzzle, not the first. It doesn't have to be the final piece if your other needs aren't glaring, but it's among the last pieces.
I still feel, to this day, that Joey Harrington could have been a great QB. But he had all of the talent beaten out of him in Detroit.

Defense would be the direction that I'd go with #1. That was the biggest thing that got Carolina to the Super Bowl. Fairley, Bowers, Dareus, Peterson, etc. would be better choices than Newton/Gabbert/Mallet/Locker.

Definitly and I think they should go with Bowers. They were a successful defense with Julius Peppers why not start there again. I personally think their biggest mistake will be taking either of the Auburn players with the #1 pick and the biggest risk would be Patrick Peterson, but not because of talent but because its the #1 pick.
