How about this lineup?

Having a visit from a JUCO SF made me think about possible lineups and I kind of like this idea...

pg Cartwright
sg Gatens
sf JUCO SF (possibly Hubbard?)
pf White
c Basabe

Bench (I think most will be close in playing time)
6. Brommer
7. Marble
8. Payne
9. May
10. Oglesby
11. McCabe
12. Archie
13. New Guard
14. D. Stokes

This could be a 13 man rotation and I think Archie could be pretty good defensively (all we really need from him)

Ideally we would still get a JUCO C over SF but I don't think it's not as necessary as I thought. It's more likely that we could get a great SF than a great C too.

Put White at the three and Archie or Brommer with them, I like the overall size of that lineup and the ability of a three to hit an open shot.
 


We don't need a deep rotation. We just need solid players. See OSU... they go like 7 deep and do just fine.

I think Marble will be fine at the 3 spot. I think he will continue to develop and he will have a much better year next year. One year under his belt and with some new recruits he should be able to stick to his actual position.

Definitely a possibility and I think we will for sure see that line-up sometimes.

My Idea was more 3-5 could take their man off the dribble and play out. We've all seen what Basabe can do and White clearly has athleticism and can hit from 20 feet so he'd be tough to guard. And a good SF could take his man off the dribble which we really need.

This lineup would still give us more length than this year because White and Basabe are longer than Basabe and Cole. But to your point White, Basabe, and Brommer would be even longer.

Anyways regardless of starters my point is I think we need a SF almost as badly as a C
 




I would be very surprised if we move basabe away from the 4 spot. I think we will see brommer starting at 5, and I would like to see white at 3 like sportstalent said.
 






When I look at what Iowa has coming and what is there, Center is the least of my worries right now, but Archie has to stay healthy. Iowa can get by with what they have, the 2012 class will bring in the Centers, Woodbury and Thok would be a nice combo, but Meyer or Ibeh along with one of those would be just as good. If Iowa brings in a big, make it a JUCO ready or a guy like Katenda who could spell Basabe, but slide to the 5, if needed, White could slide to the 5, if needed. Iowa needs to build around Basabe, get guys that compliment him, which is why I like White so much.
Marble will be an interesting player, does he play the 2 or 3, he will be valuable either way and could start.
The nice thing about posing a topic like this, Iowa will actually will have options and not be forced to play just 7 players.
Sadly, we are not OSU and don't have their 7 players, watch them next year on how many they play, if Buford and Sullinger both leave, they will be forced to play more because they will not have any experience. Matta is a great recruiter, but it has taken time for them to rebuild with all their 5* recruits to have teams like last year and this year. It took two players though, one to develop (Turner) and one to be a dominant freshman (Sullinger).
Iowa doesn't have that luxury and probably never will, but I am not bitter about that. If Iowa can build today and secure a position to be good for a long time in the future, I am good with that.
When Iowa's bench played well this season, they won games...it doesn't always have to be scoring, but come in and keep a lead or cut into a deficit. There were times they did both, just not enough and that is the lack of depth.
 


Archie did a great job yesterday. I agree. He might be valuable for this team next year. We do need a couple of big guys to play well.

I see White playing 3 or 4. I don't see him playing the 5 spot.

As far as the OSU example... I was just giving a team off the top of my head that has a short rotation and can win. We don't need a 13 man rotation. 8-10 solid contributors would be best.
 


I guess the op was really unclear. My point was more that you could take a combination of our bigs (Brommer, Archie, Basabe, White, McCabe) and they could be decent just like our SF (May, Marble, McCabe, White). So if we can get a great SF I would have no problem taking him

From everything I've read it sounds like White has some problem guarding 3's in high school because of his lateral quickness. He can compensate with his size but I'm not sure if Gatens at 2 and White at 3 is a great combination. We will see it some but I also see White being a more effective 3 when we have a quicker 2 in. I could be completely off though and seem to be in the minority.

The problem with my lineup is that we wouldn't want Basabe playing many minutes at the 5. You don't want to take (maybe) your best player and switch his position but I would like to see that lineup at times because they would be so tough offensively.

You are right, we don't need a 13 man rotation, 8-10 will work. Fran and staff just have to continue to develop players.
 


My biggest concern for this team is scoring. Losing Cole's points, boards and hustle plays that result in extra possessions is about like losing a 20 ppg scorer. May, McCabe and Marble have been brutal from the perimiter all season and who knows what to expect from Oglesby and White. Payne will help and Gatens will be Gatens, which is good and bad. I don't see Gatens stepping up to be that consistent perimter threat we need, so hopefully McCaffrey can land two contributors with some scoring abilitiy.
 


I think the guys on the roster will improve and the newcomers will come off the bench for the most part.

Until the newbies are seen in Prime Time League, I will assume this pecking order.
I think Marble will take a big step by next November.
I hope we get a big guy good enough to displace the other two at the 5.

Cole was a huge contribution but 20 ppg might be a bit much

That accounts for 11 ppg and I'm not sure he doubles that in more hustle plays.

Wrong,,,,Osu has Sullinger one 6'9 guy. The day on the big man is long gone. Its a guard and athletic game. Basabe can guard anyone. The Hawks this year aare third in offense rebounding. With positive Rebound Margin.
 


Fran would love more of a 2pt guard system. My best guess is this as stands now with recruiting.

The big men that are under 6'10" and dominant (at the center position) are freaks. Sullinger, Dwight Howard, etc. Basabe is great, but 6'7" just isn't going to cut it at center. I agree that it's become a guard's game at the college level, but you still need somebody bigger than Basabe at center.

The reason Dwight Howard can play so big is because of his long wing span and Basabe has a ridiculous wing span as well.

I don't want Basabe to play Center more than he has to but Brommer doesn't play much taller than Basabe and is listed as only 5 lbs heavier.
