How about this lineup?

The reason Dwight Howard can play so big is because of his long wing span and Basabe has a ridiculous wing span as well.

I don't want Basabe to play Center more than he has to but Brommer doesn't play much taller than Basabe and is listed as only 5 lbs heavier.

Dwight howard can play so big because he is 3 inches taller than Mel.

Sorry I never meant to compare them

I just meant Basabe can play above his height because he has the same strengths (armspan, vertical) as Howard who is playing above his height. Both are about 2-3 inches short at their positions in their leagues

Again I don't want Basabe's primary position to be C but think he could play the 5 when Brommer and Archie aren't getting minutes for whatever reason. The comparison I did make was Brommer to Basabe which is about the same. Archie can play taller than both of them.

Clearly we don't look like a slam dunk for Hubbard. But if he did come to Iowa I could see a Hubbard, Basabe, White front court. Will it be short on height? Yes. But it will be athletic and longer than people would imagine. Also, Hubbard is 25 and has played in a prison yard. Something tells me he will be able to hold his own on defense and on the boards.

People are talking about Dwight Howard. Well, if Dwight Howard showed up in college, Iowa's 6'5", 6'7", and 6'8", front line would be vulnerable. But I don't think Dwight Howard is showing up any time soon.

Add Gatens, May, Marble, and Ogelsby to that group and you have strong size at the two. The one doesn't look likely to be a spot of height for Iowa, it might be good to have someone who could stay with a quicker guard.

Seriously, there have been plenty of great NCAA teams that didn't play with a true 5. If you have tough quick guys on the front line you can collapse on a guy with a height advantage.

Bingo exactly what I was going for!

I still think Brommer and Archie could combine for about 30 mpg but just having the option of playing White and Basabe makes me not so worried about recruiting bigs. Let's face it our team just needs A LOT

Btw it sounds like we're probably Hubbard's favorite but he still has four other visits to think otherwise

Hubbard's decision is going to be based on a totally different set of criteria than the traditional college student. I would expect academic program choice and career placement opportunities will be extremely important. Just don't know how that will play out.

Wrong,,,,Osu has Sullinger one 6'9 guy. The day on the big man is long gone. Its a guard and athletic game. Basabe can guard anyone. The Hawks this year aare third in offense rebounding. With positive Rebound Margin.

OSU has Sullinger, a future NBA first round pick surrounded by Lighty, Buford, Lauderdale, Diebler, Craft, etc. Basabe is thin freshman learning to play the post surrounded by, ahhhhhhh, well, he has Cartwright. Sullinger is a great player, but nobody can sag down low against OSU's shooters while everyone can sag against our perimeter shooters. Basabe has a bright future, but he can't guard bigger guys and needs space to operate down low.

The big men that are under 6'10" and dominant (at the center position) are freaks. Sullinger, Dwight Howard, etc. Basabe is great, but 6'7" just isn't going to cut it at center. I agree that it's become a guard's game at the college level, but you still need somebody bigger than Basabe at center.
Howard is 6'11", has a huge wingspan, has hops out of this world and is one of the top 5 players on the planet. Why the heck was his name even brought up?

He's listed at 6'11, is actually 6'10 and is 6'9 barefoot. His height was a concern/talk before the 04 draft
