Iowa to play in CBI Tournament??

I was comparing the system of NCAA post season basketball to t-ball. There was a presumption on my part that the reader would realize that something for 18-22 year olds should have a higher standard of participation than something for 5 year olds. 10-21 or 11-20 teams shouldn't be invited to a tournament.

That said, I think if Iowa was extended an invitation for the CBI they should take it for all of the reasons previously mentioned. It wouldn't be Iowa's fault that the system is ridiculous, much like the bowl system where 6-6 teams make a bowl. Same deal there. If Iowa goes 6-6 next year I wouldn't blame them for accepting a bowl bid.

Yes, there is the NCAA with 68 teams, the NIT with 32 teams, the College Basketball Invitational with 16 teams and the Collegeinsiders.com Tournament with 16 teams. One is the CBI and the other (the one Drake was in) is the CIT.
 


I think it would be interesting to see how we shape up against non conference teams. We started the year up and down in the non conference and know we don't measure up to the elite teams in the big ten, but I would like to see how we fare against mid majors or other struggling teams from BCS conferences.

I agree it be fun to see how at this point we measure up against some of the better non power conference teams. I'd like to think we'd be one of the favorites. I'd take 4 extra games, is the CBI the one that has best of 3 final??? So maybe 5 or 6 games if thats the case. It would be embarassing if it was year 4 of lick era, but in year one with fran and a young team it's nothing but positive.
 


Last year the CBI only took one team with a record remotely as bad as Iowa's current record and that was Oregon State who happened to be the defending champs. There are plenty of teams with winning records that will not make the NCAA's or NIT. The NIT will be populated by bubble teams for the NCAA. the next step down will be small conference runner ups. A bunch of these teams will have conference records way above .500. It would make no sense for Iowa to get an invite.

That being said, I do like the 2 out of three final round in this tournament. Really lets coaching and player adjustment come into play.
 


I think this would be pretty cool. As mentioned above, it'd be great for Cole to participate in some post season just once, and the extra practice and competition can only be good for the young guys.

Oregon State's record was 13-17 coming into the CBI (the year they won it). And that was in a PAC-10 that's been embarrassingly down for a few years.

Oregon State won 7 conference games in a Pac Ten that sent 6 teams to the NCAA Tournament. Iowa has won 3 conference games in a Big Ten that is predicted to send 5 teams to the NCAA Tournament.

Seriously, Iowa is not going to be playing in this tournament.
 






Look its all great that CBI takes teams with winning records, but there definitely the possibility that a lot of those team were under .500 in non-conference play but played well in a weak conference. Talent wise Iowa could compete with a lot of the teams that were in the tournament last year and with a 7-5 record non-conference record it is possible Iowa could get invited.

Remember Iowa had a strength of schedule in the top 20. Also there will be plenty of more deserving teams that will decline playing in the CBI for various reasons.
 


The only way I see the CBI taking Iowa would be if they were being placed to possibly raise the attendance figures for another local institution, um like perhaps another school in Iowa, just a little ways north?

Still would be a radical long shot situation.

Too late. You're already on record as saying there is no way Iowa will be playing in the tournament. :)
(I think everyone probably agrees it is a long shot)

Realize I said "radical" long shot. Which means way, way more than a long shot. But, I was trying to find some way to be a little optimistic, and also indicating that I expect UNI to get an invite.

Given that Oregon and Oregon State have recently won the CBI, I wouldn't rule us out for that just yet because there is room for power conference teams there.
