Barta and Ferentz are going to get crucified

With neither of them being in attendance today the media is going to destroy the program yet again. It is mind baffling that Iowa football does not have a member of the coaching staff (Paul is not the answer here) or of Doyle's S&C staff....that will be the comments and a major blunder.

Listen Gary, you are the AD....this is inexcusable. People will be disgusted with the previous 24 hours and how the communication and lack there of has transpired.

They deserve to be crucified. Not to sound selfish, but what kind of implications do you think this will have on recruiting. "You're thinkin about Iowa? Did you hear their head coach didn't even come to see them immediately after 13 players were admitted in the hospital? They obviously don't care for their players."

I'm very disappointed with our staff and our AD.

Exactly what would Ferentz do, as he wasn't there during the training process, or what would Barta do, other than be there? You have a parent who is willing to talk about one specific patient (ie, what Jim Poggi underwent throughout the week prior), a doctor who can speak about the actual medical issues, and the director of football operations. He's in charge of the day-to-day operations and activities, no?

EDIT: I'm not saying that not having Barta and Ferentz is okay, or fine. I would have thought they'd be there, but just trying to present the flip side without being a total homer.

I feel you Burky. I have not even thought about the recruiting aspect..I am still trying to understand how 48 hours after 13 players being admitted to the hospital we have an AD and head coach are still out of town. I can handle Kirk being away with recruiting if doctors have assured him things are going ok, i will give him a pass...not so much from the AD side. these type of press conferences cannot be messed up and Barta dropped the ball big time by not being present and representing his program.

Twitter has exploded, the national media is destroying Iowa already.

See my post below, I can understand Kirk being away (sort of).

The athletic director is the voice of a program, end of story. Barta is missing a PC where 13 football players are in the hospital. The media is destroying him already for not being there....perception is reality and by the two main figures of Iowa football not being present it paints a poor picture based on the severity of the issue.

He's the F-in leader of the program, for chrissakes. He should have cut his trip short and returned to be the face of Iowa football during this mini crisis.

I agree, both men will be crucified. And deserve to be.

Yeah, just like Urban Meyer got crucified last year when Florida kept trotting out Steve Addazio to answer questions.

Oh, wait...

But what would Barta say, or do, other than being there and saying "We are concerned for player safety" or "We will look into this". Or is that all he needs to do? (Honest question).

Ok...Kirk's on a recruiting trip, to nail down this class and he's supposed to just say "screw it, I gotta get back to IC to answer questions about something I wasn't there for"? Then we'd all be crucifying him for not nailing down the final guys of this class...he's in a no win situation here.

Why Barta's not there I have no idea.

No offense, but you are obviously not in a leadership position in your job. When things like this occur, it is VITAL that the person(s) in charge are visible.....period.

Just last year, we had to let 20 staff members go. There was nothing the Ppresident could do, but he understood that it was important that he was the one giving the information, that he was available to the employees who were terminated.....it's called showing LEADERSHIP. In my opinion, Barta has shown little leadership during his tenure here.

As the athletic director of a major football program, yes his job is to be there and answer questions regarding the situation. If nothing else it is to show that the head of the athletic department is taking the issue seriously and making sure the safety of his players is a top priority.

Within 24 hours of the first press release, every major news media outlet across the country has covered this situation, at least one national outlet has called for a coach or multiple coaches to be fired.

Gary not attending this paints a horrible perception. If nothing else he needed to be up there to show he is in control and will make sure all proper steps are being taken.

No excuse for this and it falls squarely on Gary Barta. Step up and be a LEADER GARY!

Overreaction. Here in chicago, which is the media center of the Big Ten, all I have heard on sports stations is a passing reference to the new policy. No mention of KF,Barta....just a ten second wrapup of the story.

Settle down...

But dude, it's all over twitter and local talk radio

Both fair points. Again, I'm not saying they didn't need to be there. Just curious as to what people were expecting of Barta and Ferentz from a press conference, other than just sitting there and looking pretty.

Personally, I was a bit surprised both weren't there, especially Barta. At least Ferentz had the excuse that he was on the recruiting trail, I suppose.
