Barta and Ferentz are going to get crucified

With neither of them being in attendance today the media is going to destroy the program yet again. It is mind baffling that Iowa football does not have a member of the coaching staff (Paul is not the answer here) or of Doyle's S&C staff....that will be the comments and a major blunder.

Listen Gary, you are the AD....this is inexcusable. People will be disgusted with the previous 24 hours and how the communication and lack there of has transpired.

By who? People like Matt Perrault? The central Iowa media that wants it both ways? Last month, the problem was that Barta and Ferentz waited too long before they spoke to the press. Today it's that they weren't there to speak to the press before things got really out of hand. Had Iowa waited until either and/or both of them got back, the problem would have been (once again) that Iowa waited too long.

The Super Bowl is in 10 days, and two teams with huge national followings are playing in it. By Friday, this won't even be in the news cycle anymore. If it takes that long.

No one cares what Matt thinks. As i just posted you have media members from Yahoo, SI, and of course CBS Sportsline already ripping Barta and Ferentz for not being present.

Iowa football has had a rough month in the media and the PR folks (which falls on Barta) are not helping the situation. Barta should have been back right away after being aware of the situation.

Reading some of the replies on tos. Apparently Ferentz and co arent allowed in strength and conditioning practices, just the S&C coaches. Also Doyle couldnt be there because of player privacy reasons.

DONT KILL ME!!

The Iowa PR has been brutal.

That being said, the Iowa fanbase hasn't helped the cause any. The ability of this fanbase to go defcon 1 is astonishing. It was just a month ago the fanbase tried to take down their own program by spreading rumors as if they were fact.

So very true. If you look at who is doing the most "bashing of the program" it's far more from within the Hawkeye fan base that it is national talking heads.

The hard truth is that we have one of the worst fanbases when it comes to message boards.

Correct.

What's the big deal?

Who cares if Coach Ferentz attended the press conference! What is he going to accomplish at the press conference.

The important thing is that the parents of the players in question have access to Ferentz. Jim Poggi's dad has spoken with Ferentz 4-5 times and many times with his son's position coach. It is better to have Coach Ferentz in recruit's homes answering questions and available to parents by telephone rather than rushing back to Iowa City for a press conference.

Unlike the public, the players' parents probably all have Coach Ferentz's cell phone number. I'll bet that he has contacted everyone of the players in question parents. So far, there has been no criticism of Ferentz from any parents.

It's the players & recruits that are important. If one of my children were involved I would be more concerned about talking to Ferentz about the incident, expressing my concerns, and discussing the matter with him. I would care less if he attended a press conference. It would be important that he answered my questions and not any from the media or the public.

I don't understand the mass hysteria.

This is no biggy. Sheezh. The boys worked a bit too hard. They recover and we move on. Get over it. Making a big deal out of nothing.

That's fine. I'm not going to read any of those columns, because they aren't worth my time. That being said, I'm sure they're focused on the real issue - 13 players in the hospital - as opposed to showing fake outrage that Iowa didn't put on the right face for the public.

But in a world that rips Jay Cutler for not looking tough enough on the sidelines, style does matter over substance.

It is not good when guys like Stewart Mandel (SI), Dan Wetzel (Yahoo) have already blasted the situation.
I'm probably going way out on a limb here, but maybe (just maybe) tweets from Stewart Mandel might have a little bit of hyperole mixed in as a way to get people to click on SI.com.

I tell ya, everybody including their dead relatives want an answer. Everybody wants somebody to be crucified, shot whatever. Typical out of control Iowa fans. Get real, get a life.

This happens in businesses, this happens in government, and in sports programs. The top of the heiarchy isn't always the one to face the media. I think Barta should have been more involved in press but it's important to have the coaches there that our directly related to running the workout sessions.

That isn't Ferentz. Just because Ferentz faces the media doesn't mean the media quiets down any faster. The media is going to take their swips regardless of who meets with media. We may not like it but it saves some face providing less details as people run with information and always twist it to meet their perception anyways.

The players need to get healthy, the investigation needs to find a cause for the higher number of players needing treatment than usual, and then we can take some precautions to see it never happens again.

Everyone wants information now because people are bored and don't want to focous on their own issues. Give the investigation some time.

These kids have been in the hospital for a few days now, and now...suddenly...Kirk is getting crucified for not being where? The freaking press conference??? If he has word that these kids are all fine and doing well and he stays out on the recruiting trail, why on God's green earth is it a sin against humanity that he's not at the press conference to say things like "I don't know" and "I can't get into that because of HIPAA"?

I'd be willing to bet that he's talked to each player and their families via the phone and will see the players when he returns tonight...but if you're going to ream him a new one, at least do it for the right reasons and say he should be here in person for the kids...not the presser...holy crap...

Edit: By the way, I have no idea how long Kirk's been out of town, so he may have seen these kids, in person, already.

That's the problem. The media (it appears) is upset because Iowa didn't on the "correct" face for the media today. Never mind that there is a bakers dozen in the hospital, KIRK WASN'T THERE GODDAMMIT!!!!

The media is full of self-righteous hypocrites.

Bingo.

Remember, Mandel, Dodd and others aren't trying to tell you the "story", they are trying to promote reading their sites, clicking on ads and driving revenues for their employers.

That IS their job. Create controversy, stir the pot, cause speculation, overexcite people, you get it.

The media is full of self-righteous hypocrites.

Look. The media in Iowa doesn't have a damn thing to report 99% of the time. If they can get their grimey hands on anything Iowa football (Good or bad) You can bet they're coming strong on it. It was a slow day for the national media all the way around, and by next week it'll be old news. As for the Iowa media...Who knows.

The media is just playing the blame game, as well as some luni message forum memebers.

We have a very experienced offseason workout staff, a staff that has played a huge role in preparing players for the NFL. I could understand if this was the first year we had this staff to be worried, but this was most likely related a bug going around, drinking too much on offseason, or bad supplements.

We need to be mature as fans to not blow this up, yes there should be concern. But I have faith that coaches and training staff are doing everything they can to figure this out. Thank god none of the injuries are serious.

Knowing players are recovering, keep it down a notch, we have signing day in a week fellas. Leave it to one of most respected coaches in the country to get things fixed. But if you wanna know every detail send Ferentz your resume.
