French update

Not sure I like this, especially the last paragraph:

Christian French, ATH, 6-6, 230, Kennedy High School, Cedar Rapids, IA: French hosted Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly and defensive backs coach Chuck Martin for an in-home visit. French has been on the Irish radar for a long time now, though his recruitment has changed somewhat. Originally, Notre Dame recruited French as an outside linebacker but the talented Iowan hopes to play wide receiver at the next level. Kelly and Martin addressed that issue with French and his father Cherokee French.

“It went well,†said Cherokee French of the visit. “We spent time with Coach Kelly talking offense and what his coaching style is like. We talked about his coaching style as the head coach and offensive coordinator. We also talked about how Christian is a fit for Notre Dame.â€

Kelly was not on campus when Cherokee and Christian visited Notre Dame in the summer so this was Mr. French’s first opportunity to meet the Irish head coach.

“The main point of the visit was to just sit down with the head coach and hear some things from him,†explained Cherokee French. “I already felt good about Notre Dame. I just needed to hear some things from the head coach.â€

Though the Irish originally recruited French as an outside linebacker, both he and his father really want Christian to play wide receiver. Kelly is amenable to that idea.

“It just depends on how well he picks up the offense,†said Cherokee of his son’s playing wide receiver for the Irish. “But he is expecting him to be at wide receiver at the start of the season.â€

French plans to make a decision on Thursday, Dec. 9. Before that, he will receive in-home visits from Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz and Oregon head coach Chip Kelly. When asked if the Notre Dame visit helped the Irish cause, Cherokee responded: “They helped themselves quite a bit.â€

Let him go be a developmental player somewhere else. That's fine by me.

French is a toss up for me. Yes he does lack hands and doesnt always like contact, but I feel Iowa could some how find a way to put him to good use. I'll be happy if he signs because he is the top prospect in Iowa and it is always nice to land the top guy in the state. But if he comits elsewhere I wont be distraught.

The fact that this kid has as many top offers as he does is absurd. I have never seen the kid play however take this into account. His high school team finished what... 5-4? He had one carry (granted it went 76 yards for a td), and 10 receptions on the season (for a total of 111 yds). He is not a WR... and he will never be a big time college player, he wasn't even a big time h.s. player nor the best all around player on his team. Defensively, his statistics have been subpar and the highlight film that I saw didn't show a whole lot.

Let this kid go to ND or Oregon, because the fact of the matter is if Kirk Ferentz gets the right guys, French will hardly ever see the field at Iowa...

I know coaches who have watched French play quite a bit, and they have all said that he is overrated and really not all that good.

I have never seen the kid play .. and he will never be a big time college player

And all this time I've been thinking that Nostradamus died about four hundred years ago. What happened? You dig up his ouija board? Sure hop you didn't get taken by the old conterfeit Tarot cards scam...

He wont play offense in college....his supposed skill set should have been enough to dominate iowa high school football(this isnt Texas high school football) but it didnt....hes a three year project in college

Coe is a pretty raw athlete too, FWIW. He's not a very polished RB, runs pretty high.

I would say the similarities between French and Coe are pretty close. Both great physical attributes.

When you tag him with "be a developmental player somewhere else, thats fine by me"

That definitely reads like sour grapes to me...

It's very different. Coe is a RB by trade, French has caught 11 total passes in 1 yr at reciever. I would also say that becoming a WR is much tougher than RB when your hands aren't very good, you have to learn routes and blocking. Coe is a good runner but does need to get lower, I agree with you, but they aren't the same player by a long shot.

Have you seen Coe's stats? Not very impressive.

Another thing, a WR needs someone who can throw the ball to him. Whereas Coe needs someone to put it in his gut.

Coe is very raw. I would be surprised if he made any impact next year other than MAYNE special teams.

Watch his videos, you can tell he's just a HUGE athlete thats running people over at the hs level, which is a good thing. However, theres a lot more to being a RB than being able to run over kids 2X smaller than you.

I read a scouting report from one of the rivals guys who saw him this fall, one of the first words he used was "raw"

That doesn't mean he's not going to be good, it just means he has a lot to improve on as a RB.

Won't argue with you on that. I think it will do him good to have a year to get the position figured out. I think it would take French several years to get closer to the field, and you can't teach hands. I don't care what anyone says.

I don't have sour grapes, because to have those you have to have something against something/someone. I have nothing against French, I just don't think he's that great of a stud recruit. Not saying Coe is, but I like his potential as he is stud athlete that can just run people over, French won't do that. Coe will learn to run with power and purpose and be a good RB.

Also, don't be mad that I don't think French is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I just don't have my hometown homer goggles on.

Do they really stream these press conferences for HS kids?

I don't think I've ever seen that. Sometimes they have it on KCRG, in Cedar Rapids.

Wow, I hope he's wrong.

I don't really care if he is or not. As I've stated many times, this isn't a big time instate recruit that it will really hurt if we miss out on him (like Wegher or Davis were or Blythe was this year)
