Ferentz on the Side

I had no idea we finished second for Mark Ingram:

...am really not sure. Quite frankly, I thought we were wasting our time, like I thought we were with Mark Ingram. that was a close second and that is no good in recruiting. In Hunter’s case he chose here, and I was surprised

I thought this was much more in depth then any on the side notes I have read before. I really thought you had picked his brain, and I was impressed coach answered as in depth as he did. I thought it was great! Thanks

Q: Was there something that DJK did at media day that has had you hold him back with us?

Ferentz: He is choosing to stay out too because he doesn’t want to say something to get me ticked off. We are trying to coexist peacefully.

Got a good laugh out of this one.

this is the most candid i've ever seen of him. especially in regards to recruiting. wish we could see more of this side of him.

If I were guessing, he probably doesn't get too many questions on recruiting of players currently on the roster. NCAA doesn't allow discussions on current recruiting activities, or at least about specific recruits.

You are right about the recruiting question. But also consider this, Jon has serious clout now. He has done a masterful job of walking the right line to have this kind of access. While I think KF is purposefully measured with the media in general, he has been more open with Jon this year. That is probably partly due to Jon's history if covering the team and partly due to Jon's heightened status as a broadcaster.

Beyond that, however, all season people have been commenting on how KF seems to be a little more candid this year. Probably has a lot to do with how much he likes this group of players. I for one hope he keeps recruiting the right kind of kids.

I hate to break it to you but Jon does not get the "Kirk on the Side" info - it comes from Rob Howe. And there is no "status" associated with getting it other than joining the mob of reporters that huddle around Kirk after his presser to get a little more info.

Oh.... Never mind.

But that is what I freaking get for trying to butter up the mod after hammering him on so many occasions. Never make that mistake again.

beat me to it.

Right, this is a gaggle session...reporters are around Kirk after he does his presser and he gets asked questions from all sides. There is very little 'status'' opportunity with Kirk...he is pretty close to the vest...Alford has his favorites...don't think Lick did...most coaches do. Kirk may in his mind, but I dont know of anyone that cracks the inner sanctum from the press.
