Kirk Herbstreit names Hawkeyes as B1G Sleeper

Hopefully this will be a brake out year for the Iowa offense and find Kirk and the Iowa fans among one of the top twelve teams in the playoffs.

God only knows that the loyal Iowa fan base deserve it. The odds would even have increased significantly if we had Kaleb Johnson for one more season. Maybe one of the backs will step up and surprise and make this truly a season for the books.

I mean, anytime they're returning decent o-line, known runningbacks, a Parker defense, a punter who grew up with the Southern Cross in the night sky.....AND....a possibly good quarterback they're going to be a potential sleeper. Or at the least, a potential disruptor.

I don't know what to expect. I could see a playoff birth. I could also see a rather depressing (record wise) season because of the expansion and schedule. Which will suck harder if they're actually capable on offense. Instead of 3 grumpy ass weekends where my wife avoids being around me, it could be 5. Or worse. Even with a good team.

I keep telling myself I gotta enjoy the fact that I'll get to see some offense (hopefully). And even if they do have a dogfight of a season on their hands, it'll be more entertaining. I need to learn how to lose. Also, we can be relatively sure they will absolutely score an upset or ruin someone's day.

I think the expansion and stuff...makes the ISU and Nebraska games a little bit more super bowlish for us.

I just need someone to give me a hug and tell me it will be ok. The only thing I got going for me is there was no late summer super secret closed practice where it leaked that the #1s on offense couldn't even move the ball on the #2s and 3s on defense.

Ha -- yeah I think it was 2 summers ago when it leaked that during the last scrimmage of fall practice the #1 offense failed to get a single FD in a full half of plays. Was definitely a sign of things to come.

As far as Iowa being a 'sleeper'? If we beat the Clones, Rutgers, and Indiana...then we can talk.

Yea, but labeling a team a sleeper is always at the beginning of the season before you know the outcome of games. That's why they are called sleepers.

KH has always been a big KF fan, so no shock here. As others have noted, we have some key pieces back, so its not exactly the hottest take out there. Iowa is going to have to upset at least two Top 20 teams to have a shot at the playoffs. I don't see Iowa running the table in the conference slate, which means the ISU game is pretty much a must-win for Herbstreit's prognostication to come true.
