LeVar to Michigan State

I was expecting to find Fry in a broken state when I logged on today. He is taking the loss of his golden boy KF replacement better than I expected. Thoughts and prayers are with you, Fry. :)

Woods was in third place to be the internal replacement for KF, which is highly unlikely to happen anyway, so this semi-lateral move makes sense if Woods wants to be a HC somewhere soon. If that is what he wants, then I wish him God's speed. He might have to drop down a level or two to get such a gig in the near term, but by all accounts he is a talented coach and deserves a shot.

He was a good recruiter, but timing wise, this was the best way it could happen. KF will be able to replace him as a recruiter and STs Coordinator and not rush that. On the field, I felt like the Special Teams were inconsistent this season and cost us in a few critical areas. Both kickers regressed this season. KW wasn't coached to do what he does, that is just how he was made.

KF needs to find a good replacement. He will.

If nothing else, I think we can all agree those additional responsibilities could be given to Seth Wallace and the Hawks' special teams wouldn't skip a beat. Look at the linebacking corp. He loses all-Americans and just reloads. He seems to recruit circles around the rest of the staff, develops players as well as anyone, and all while taking on the heavy responsibilities of associate Head Coach.

Yeah.
Fitz is putting together a pretty nice staff.
Might pick up some talent from the Michigan dumpster fire.
Perhaps a dramatic turnaround?
MSU has a ton of money and some enthusiastic alumni who isn't afraid to spend it. If they can keep everyone happy they can come back to where they were. It wasn't too long ago they were right up there in the BIG10 East

Regardless of what I think or say or claim or whatever you guys want to call it, most Iowa media on podcasts lately are pretty confident this is part of a larger plan to bring Woods back after KF is gone. Did anyone see LeVar and Lester on the field after the nebraska game?

He already knew then that this was his last Kinnick game on the west sideline for a while. The tears and hugging wasn't just a random emotional thing that they caught on camera and posted to Twitter by chance. You guys should all see this for what it is---a good thing. If KF, Beth, and donors think Farence has 2-3 years left in the tank you're going to see LeVar back home when he's done.

Where I work, children/grandchildren of the owners cannot come directly on board after college. They force them to go out and go through the process of applying and getting themselves hired at a job somewhere else at the ground level. They have to experience working for someone under a different set of rules and different culture for a period of time. Without dad holding their hands and wiping their butts. It's a hard and fast rule that hasn't been broken since the 60s. It works. Some of those kids and grandkids have "failed" at it and they don't get into positions of leadership here.

I've seen plenty of companies where little Jimmy never gets the silver spoon taken out of his mouth and goes right into management, and when dad and granddad die or go to the home the business tanks and either falls apart or gets sold.

This thing with Woods is a version of the former so the latter doesn't happen.

With what Fitz is putting together in Lansing, there's no way LeVar's only son wouldn't be packing up his room and wearing a green hoodie right now.

I am fine with Woods leaving and getting experience under a different banner. Fitz is a very good coach, and while he has had a love/hate relationship with Iowa, of late, he has obviously been friendly to the program sending his son here. I think he and KF have a genuine respect for each other and both run their program the right way. It was too bad the way that things ended for Fitz at his alma mater, but again, there has not been a shred of evidence that he knew about any of it, he was just the captain of a shitty ship. And frankly, for his own good, he needed to move on. He hit a ceiling at NW and was treading water.

The suggestion that there is a set plan in place for Woods to leave and then return as the prodigal son when KF retires is not accurate. No one plays chess like that in this context, least of all Beth. When KF retires, and unless he comes over a monster season and has the juice to annoint his replacement, there will be a comprehensive and national search for a new HC.

If the suggestion is that things could fall into place like that, sure. I mean, he has a better chance of getting the HC job at Iowa from MSU then being an internal hire. Again, in my view he was in third place for that. But, if he has a good run at MSU he will certainly be under consideration when KF retires. Low odds, but could happen.

I think you're underestimating the expertise of Woods and how he put his heart and soul into those Special Teams. Jones, DeJean, and Wetjen were all special, for sure, but if you think they accomplished all they did on their own, you're mistaken. Woods was all about details, and that filtered down through all the Special Teams. Special Teams coaches make a huge difference -- just look at the change at Nebraska when they brought in Tennessee's ST coach this past season...prior to the Iowa game this season KF noted the biggest difference in this year's NE's team compared to the previous year was the improvement in their STeams.

There's no reason KF shouldn't be able to find one of the best ST coaches in the nation and bring him or her to ICity. But make no mistake, the bar that's been set is very, very high...and past performance will not be easy to duplicate.

I wonder if someone like Jay Norvell would even be remotely interested in that position to get back in the fray. I heard somewhere since his release from CSU he had been around Iowa City and the team quite a bit.

I was waiting for someone else to jump in first on this one. First, I listen to most of the more popular Hawkeye podcasts, and none that I listen to (Chad+Scott, Two Guys, Marc+Rob, Kakert, Harty) have said with any conviction that this is part of a larger plan to bring Woods back. All I've heard is speculation that this puts him in a better position to perhaps one day interview for the gig.

And according to Kakert, Fitz also tried to hire Wallace. If the powers that be at Iowa are playing chess with Woods and plan to bring him back as HC in 2-3 years, why wouldn't Wallace say screw that and jump ship too?

Iowa football is an approximately billion dollar business. If the powers that be at Iowa have determined Woods is absolutely the right guy to entrust this billion dollar business with (as well as their own jobs) but just needs a little more seasoning, then you do not allow him to leave for one of your main competitors. An organization at which he will attract recruits and staff members from your own business.

Woods very well may end up back at Iowa, but there is no way for even Goetz to predict how things will unfold. Fitz and Woods have huge success, and one or both end up coaching Michigan in a couple years. Fitz struggles to get any traction, that 3-24 big ten record in 3 of his 4 last big ten seasons seem accurate now, and the staff is fired in 3 years (with Woods having diminished his profile). Iowa puts up a classic 11-1 season, makes the playoffs, hosts a game in Kinnick in the biggest football game in IC ever, Kirk steps down and Wallace or Lester ride the wave to take over as head coach.

The realistic scenario is that Woods and Goetz exchange pleasantries, goodbyes and promise to keep in touch.

It would be intriguing for him. He has had some Coordinator work in the past working mainly with the Offense. He would bring some instant credibility with him as he has a pretty nice resume.

I wonder if they would consider moving Budmayer to Special Teams Coordinator and having Norvel coach WR and passing game stuff which he has high level experience in as well. I could see either working for the betterment of the team.

It would be an interesting move for sure. KF mentioned him that he had been around the last month at practices and etc. Some would argue that it would be a step back for him, however, his head coaching career hasn't been super stellar. Sometimes there are perks to not being responsible for the whole show. Often times the buck stops with the head coach. Definitely wouldn't be opposed to having someone like him with experience sliding into that spot.

I could see it. He is 62, born in Madison. He got paid for a few years at Colorado State. He'd make as much or more as an assistant at Iowa as he did as Nevada's head coach ($625k).

He probably won't be a candidate for a head coaching job unless he wants to drop below Mountain West level.

Kirk might want to promote one of the highly thought of analyst types to regular assistant though, so that he doesn't lose them. I'd guess that's the most likely route, and then perhaps he juggles the staff so someone gets reassigned to special teams.

Maybe Norvell is willing to take a senior analyst gig for $100k or whatever. That might be attractive to both parties.

Is Wallace the Co-Def.coordinator along with LB coach and Associated HC? In my head for some reason I thought PP had the DC title alone.
