"IF" this is indeed Kirk's swan song, who do you want?

Reading through some of this made me realize that KF doesn't have much of a coaching tree like Hayden Fry did.
It's true, though not many coaches have a tree as successful as Hayden did. The fact that our successful coordinators like the Parkers have been so fiercely loyal speaks volumes about Kirk though. I'm sure Woods has had opportunities, and I think he definitely deserves consideration when Kirk does finally step down.

Woods would be one of my first choices and then hope he could convince Phil Parker to stick around.

No one in Detroit had a good thing to say about him.
That definitely was a failed experiment, but he remains well-respected and his players rave about his approach to teaching. Many coaches just fit better at the college level, and he may be one of them, though I wouldn't be shocked if he ends up back in the NFL as a DC.

Patricia was a good DC at New England. That's how he got the HC job in Detroit. He's just one of those guys who is a great coordinator but not a good HC. Kind of like Josh McDaniels.

I would think that the reason many of Iowa's top assistant coaches haven't left for head coaching jobs is they're waiting out for Kirk's retirement to possibly get his job. Woods, Wallace and Lester have to be in that group.

There are lots of reasons but in that profession stability is something that is criminally overlooked. If you perform and have a solid chance of retaining your job why not stay? The way coaching is you could very well be one and done and then start the rat race all over again and nothing is guaranteed.

I think most of the younger coaches have kids and Iowa is a great place to raise a family, taxes are relatively low and cost of living is lower than other alternatives. There are lots of reasons that Iowa is attractive that often get overlooked. I also what Ferentz has built in terms of culture is not weighed heavily enough. Iowa isn't the best at what they do they are the only ones to do what they do in my opinion. There are lots of teams that try to emulate what Iowa does and not many if any have been successful in the long run.
