Barta and his big mouth..

Regardless of Barta’s remarks, the fact remains that schools are using NIL as a recruitment tool. He actually did reference that concern. I would argue that reigning in NIL should focus on that circumstance. In many ways, the transfer portal has contributed to blatant misuse of NIL. Should players be allowed to use NIL? Yup. That is the law. I have, however, read countless posts on HN berating cheaters in the recruitment world. The transfer portal and NIL have opened a new door for cheaters. That is what needs to be fixed. The red herring in some posts above is the assumption that any restraint on NIL is a direct attack on the rights of players. Well, that argument does not make much sense. Like any innovation, adjustment toward improvement is part of the plan. Right now, the Wizard of Oz is leading the charge on players’ rights while ignoring the “other” elephant in the room.

There's always been cheating. The NCAA has just cherry picked who and how they go after folks for it. Bill Self has been under 'investigation' for all sorts of cheating for the duration of his time at Kansas yet he's celebrated as a champion now... But yeah since they can't seem to get to any kind of conclusion to his whole deal in a timely manner under the old way let's worry about this instead... Give me a break.

Don't get me wrong yes yesterday is as good a day as any to start coming down on all the coaches that tamper. Start with that guy out at USC now and pick your SEC school. But the NCAA is so toothless with it that what do we expect them to do? They wouldn't actually put the hammer down on a coach for it. They'll find plausible deniability to it all and the players won't rat them out so expect more of the same

And yes quite frankly the Supreme court ruled that the NCAA is to have no regulatory power in regards to NIL of student athletes. They are not employees of the schools so they have zero rights or power to do much. They can tinker with the transfer rules yes. But in no way can they try saying how much players can make. They can say who they don't want them getting in bed with such as gambling/porn/alcohol/tobacco companies etc. But they can't have a say in how much is being paid at all.

That does need fixed and what you are saying is all fine and I agree with it and I actually don't disagree with what Barta said really. But I do however care about optics. I care about perception. The way he's thinking is over. Restricting players freedom to move has also lost a lot of court battles. Get with the times. Understand what is happening in the world. Be in touch with what needs to be done and have a forward looking focus on where the sport is going. I can tell you this, it's not going back to suppressing college athletes freedom. Whether I, you or Gary believes its right or not, whether it's ruining the sport or not, that's not what we're debating here. I think it's completing ruining everything. That said, if your Barta, keep that shit to yourself. That headline is very damaging traveling around the interwebs the last 24 hours.

I don't want the AD of the team I follow being the one speaking up and leading that charge. It is damaging to our athletic program any way you slice it and this will be used against Iowa heading into this new world. We could be fine, it just seems like he shot himself in the foot to me and Iowa needs to look for advantages to get a leg up on their competition.

IMO the problem isn't what he said as every AD in the country believes and supports his logic. The problem is that every AD in the country was smart enough to stay quiet hoping someone will eventually speak out. And guess who came to their rescue and did the UofI absolutely no favors in the process.

Yes read the room. The overwhelming opinion on it from the players and that pesky supreme court is that the way that the NCAA and college athletics had been restricting student athletes all these years from having control of their NIL was unconstitutional. That's the end all be all point to it. The NCAA isn't to have any control over regulating or limiting what individuals can make from 3rd parties. Period end of debate. For an AD not just him but any of them to publicly put out there they want to regulate/limit NIL for players to any extent is a terrible side of the table to be on now.

Sure the NCAA can change the transfer eligibility rules again if they want. It would have a domino effect to an extent on NIL. Because with it like it is now after one year you can see what happened with the QB Ewers that went to OSU for one yr redshirted and now went to Texas. He pretty much is cashing it big time and hasn't played a snap yet. Schools aren't a fan of it but to me it's a tough shit so what situation. Get used to it and recruit accordingly. It's not the schools $ being wasted if the kid ends up being a bust. I get it coaches will hate everything about this because it adds a layer of uncertainty to their rosters year to year and it's more work for them to recruit non stop not just new recruits but everyone on their rosters. To that I say tough shit they are paid millions of bucks figure it out.

The issue here is Bartas reason to want to do it. He saying he wants to so they can limit/regulate NIL for the players and that is what'll get him in trouble. Those schools that are embracing NIL will all point at us and say don't go there they are anti capitalist and don't want you making what you can get. KF has dodged the whole Chris Doyle racial thing. That hasn't affected recruiting or winning as of yet but this sort of thing sure as hell could...

When I typed "read the room" I should have added Barta isn't even in the building as I meant he just doesn't read the room as you said. I should have used !!!!!!!!!

I am going to stay with my pie in the sky solution because it’s the right thing to do. Period. (I am not against NIL)

That’s all fine and dandy, but the rules aren’t going to change and publicly putting Iowa’s athletic department out there as being resistant to something that (like it or not) is part of college sports now, does absolutely nothing but hurt the program. Farta has once again proved that he’s a dense buffoon whose only applicable skill is raising money, and that he is completely devoid of any awareness of the negativity he brings on Iowa sports. The sooner he goes, the better.

Hopefully it’s before he permanently fucks things up, but I won’t hold my breath.

It'll be fascinating to see how this all plays out. It just sucks that Barta wants to put himself out there on this side of the fence publicly. It'll have a negative impact and he'll have only the guy in the mirror to blame

I'd propose that Gary put into his own contract that he needs to sit out a year of employment if he ever leaves Iowa. And also add that clause to Kirk and Fran's contracts. Because maybe then other schools wouldn't offer ADs and coaches "big sums of money" and thus we can "control" and "stabilize" college athletics.

Sometimes, it is a very good idea to say, “I just don’t know enough about this to pass judgement.” That is a quote I heard years ago, in person, from none other than Cassius Clay. No, he was not Muhammad Ali then. Old ball room in the Iowa Union. Vietnam era. I sat on the aisle, and he walked right by me. It was stunning. I often think about times I should have followed his advice. Oh well.

Good one.

No sympathy at all from me for NCAA or member institutions here. Had years to figure it out. Chose to fight it all the way to the supreme court. Now they're screwed.
Could’ve gotten away with some jersey revenue and letting kids sign autographs for a few bucks. They (NCAA and schools) crapped in their own beds. They can lie in them.

Hawk Central today has some very interesting quotes from Fran Mac on transfers and NIL. I did not know that once a player enters the transfer portal, the school he intends to leave has no obligation to allow him/her to return. So, Josh could have been cut loose. Wow. I will let interested parties read Fran’s remarks first hand.
