Peter Jok Invited to NBA Draft Combine

Jok had been an alternate.

Good for Pete. I hope for him and the University that he balls out at the combine. I don't know if Pete has the goods for the NBA outside of shooting, but I sure hope that he does. He was a great kid and a great hawk. I would love nothing more for him then to see some success. His story could be a powerful reminder of the "American Dream". Good luck Pete. Put it all on the line son and have faith that it is good enough.

Somebody please explain. Is the NBA combine for the tweener fringe players on the edge to participate. So, the top notch talent won't go which is good for them and the fringe players do go to show their game? Players under them also sit home?

Who exactly is the combine aimed for?

I don't think we can apply hard classifications for the NBA combine participants. Yes, some of the top players sit it out but it's more than just fringe players. Here's the current list of invites:

High lottery picks tend to skip the combine (or just participate in drills only) for the NBA lately - nothing to gain at this point. Jok has nothing to lose by going.

A year ago, the top two picks -- Ben Simmons and Brandon Ingram -- did not attend. Lottery pick Domantas Sabonis and first-rounder Dejounte Murray didn't attend either.

The combine will take place May 9-14 at the Quest Center in Chicago, and many of those projected to be taken in the first round have elected to participate in the drills. However, many have declined the 5-on-5 game portion for fear of hurting their draft stock.

And the scouting report that comes out after the combine:

Is a true NBA talent as a shooter, especially from range, and will be able to stretch defenses in that regard. However, his inability to get his own shot against NBA defenders, and the fact that he will be a defensive liability against NBA caliber scorers, will likely find him either hanging on in the NBA, or having a highly successful career in Europe.

I love me some Peter Jok, but seeing him trying to defend Clay Thompson or any of the elite players in the NBA isn't going to be pretty.

I'm just hoping that someone will take a chance on an elite shooter. He has deficiencies no doubt, but there are times when scoring is more important than defense. I like him at New Orleans. Somewhere with an elite rim protector could help mitigate his defensive liability. Good luck Pete.

Quick update from what I've read about the combine is that Jok is struggling a bit. I'm guessing also Trimble will regret leaving school unless he was just super tired of it.

Someone will. If he can out score who he's guarding, it's a net benefit. And, if he can stretch defenses to open up the paint, then that is another benefit. I'd say that NBA teams want NBA shooters on their team. Ultimately, a true NBA shooter who is marginal on defense will get more than a fair chance.
