Baer gets B1G Sixth Man of Year

A coaches' dream. Follows his shot, boxes out, screens for teammates, talks on defense, stays positive and doesn't pout on the bench, dives after loose balls, never gives up on plays, never jogs down the floor............ what the hell is wrong with this kid?

I said it earlier in the year, Baer is the type of player who brings so much to a team that he would improve any team that he was on.

These kind of well rounded blue collar players don't just come along all too often anymore. Some of the best players come as walk-ons (see Dallas Clark) because crap isn't just handed to them on a plate and they have to prove themselves. Those that make it thru that mental challenge often come out on top with hard work.

I'm sure many college coaches looked at Baer & liked his game but questioned his physique for Div 1. All Baer wanted was a chance and he exploited that chance. He really forced Fran's hand at having to play him. It got to the point Fran would have been crazy to leave him on the bench. That's all Baer and his attitude and hard work. You couldn't look past his production. Nice story!

It'll be tough keeping him on the bench next yr... I wouldn't expect him to repeat this award.

Don't be surprised if he keeps coming in as the 6th man as it's specialized role. Also, don't be surprised if Baer is someday drafted in the NBA. Just say'in. Ryan Bowel likes this.

Yeah I could see that too I suppose. I just wonder if there's a possibility of Iowa playing a big lineup next yr. I don't think Iowa will start the year this way but imagine this group being on the floor together for any stretch. The mixing and matching Iowa will be able to do will be crazy.

Baer
Pemsl
Cook

I'm not sure a defense exists thats designed for 3 post players. Pemsel would be horribly out of position at the 3 spot. No way we could run man D. 2-3 Zone might work and I have seen Baylor pull it off before with three bigs but the 3-2 zone which I think is our best defensive set would be impossible with any of those bigs having to sink inside and flair back to the wing as the ball moves. Maybe Nunge could play the 3 with Cook and Garza or Cook and Pemsel, but I don't anticipate seeing Pemsel, Cook and Garza on the floor together.

Iowa has played a ton of 2-3 zone this year and yeah I'd certainly see that being what they'd do with a group like that out there for any stretch. It's not the most ideal of lineups in that they'd only have 2 shooters on the floor. But good luck out rebounding that group. I don't think you'll see that group out there for long stretches by any means it's just an interesting option.

Fran is constructing a machine with many interchangeable parts...with talent upgrades...

Should be fun and interesting...in the future...has the sports car he always wanted

Class Act. Baers response to winning Sixth Man of the Year:

"To all aspiring basketball players: You do not have to start to make an impact on the game!! Find your role and be a star in your role. Thank you to the coaches who voted for me, and my teammates past and present who have pushed me along the way. B1G week ahead. #GoHawks"

Love the kid. Love what he stands for. Love how he leads through hard work. Baer will be the catalyst for Iowa's success for the next 4 to 5 years even with him only being around for 2 more. Every player that he plays with will be better for seeing what Baer does.
