Kids Day thread.

Woot woot they finally replaced the old TV's by concessions with new flat screens!

haha, about 7 years too late. I know it is tough to budget in a bunch of 36 inch LG or whatever type HD lcd screens on into that $100 million budget.

Hell even Insignia Best Buy brand TVs 5 years ago would be better than what they had.

This is especially nice on the hot and really cold windchill days where the casual fan or person attending the game with a fanatic fan can go down in the tunnel and somewhat watch the game while out of the elements.

So what is the estimate of the number of younger kids there and estimate of the total crowd numbers?

From watching the offense , I think we can officially squash any belief that KF changed anything up this year.

Boy the first team STRUGGLED to move the ball in any way early. Absolutely no running game. At all. I hope that's because Iowa is going to be stout against the run. (More on that later). I could foresee offensive issues before the scrimmage even started when CJB had to ground the ball on 7-7 drills because nobody could get open. CJB eventually settled in and looked pretty decent, although he's going to be running for his life. A lot.
I thought the tight ends looked pretty good (Kittle and Krieger-Coble). Tevaun caught a tough ball or two in traffic. Overall I was less than impressed with the offense.
Defensively I saw a lot of reason for optimism. I really do think the offensive woes, particularly running the ball, was a result of the D playing well. Jaleel is av freaking man inside. He is a load to move out of there. Drew Ott would have had a crushing sack on the first play had it not been a scrimmage and he was in the backfield a lot. The secondary is as good as advertised. Good coverage in drills and live and they look fast.
Special teams will be another adventure. I like Tevaun returning kicks, but I'm worried about him staying healthy. He'll be needed in the passing game. Parker retuned too. Both kickers were just awful. It is frightening how many kicks were missed in drills.
Today was a fun day with the kids. I saw some good and some bad on the field. Probably about what I expected. I really do think there are some players on this team. Can they figure it out? Hope so.

IIRC, all of the really good Hawkeye teams of the KF era looked lack luster on O during the fall open practice. The running joke around my household was "the Hawkeyes won!" and everybody agreed that the D came away the winner. Of course in 2008 the O we saw @ kids day was terrible with JC at the helm. And I remember just how skinny Stanzi looked when he was on the field. I remember being worried about the O after the 2009 fall practice as well. I would expect a competent defense to be able to shutdown our limited offense when going head to head as they really do know what is coming next. To bad the kicking sucks, it's to important in KF's schemes. Got to get some points every time you have the ball because of the low production.

1) They better get the sound system tuned prior to the start of the season. When they cranked it to a certain level of loudness, it got really annoying with too much bass & distortion.
2) I worry about stretching the field, AGAIN. Not too many attempts to throwing downfield. If they did, not too many successful completions.
3) I would like to see them somehow get George Kittle involved more, especially early in the season while Duzey gets up to speed.
4) I think Iowa has a good group of QB's and looks positive for the future. This can depend on anyone transfers sec to not playing. I think Wiegers would do a decent job if forced to play for whatever reason. Could there be another QB controversy? I think he moved the 2nd team better than Beathard moved the 1st team but Beathard was going up against the 1 D & Wiegers the 2nd. But, he ran the O well and throws a nice ball. Beathard seemed to throw several balls that got batted by the D line. I think Ryan Boyle is in at 3rd & I think he has a bright future, but he's not 6'2 like the roster states, but more like 5'11" IMO. But, I really don't care. I realize they bloat the sizes at times, but I think they are really fudging his. He fires a quick ball though.
5) I like our slew of RB's. Don't know how much we'll see Eric Graham this year, but he has a nice frame & seems D1 game ready. Good vision & speed. Impressed with him. Akrum Wadley ran well with pretty good vision, but, don't look for him to catch many balls out of the backfield unless he really works on this more. He had his share of drops notably in RB receiving drills and dropped a TD from about the 15 in 11 on 11 drills. But, he could turn that around.
6) Tevaun Smith is a beast & looks ripped. He was his usual which is good. Vandeberg caught some good balls downfield and impressed me more than Hillyer. I thought Hillyer was supposed to have this terrific speed but doesn't look like it on the field with the gear on. He doesn't seem to get good separation or be able to get open easily. Stone seemed to get many reps with the 1st teamers. McCarron and Parker also seemed to get a lot of work. Makes me wonder if they are searching at WR to see who can emerge. Always a WR issues at Iowa. This concerns me as teams will load the box if Iowa cannot figure this out or find a way to go to the TE more. Iowa doesn't seem to go to the TE as much with Davis as when KOK was here. They should find a way to get the TE more involved. Again, Kittle could be a factor and had a couple good catches. They lined him out wide a time or two as well.
7) Kicking game. Cough Cough. Kind of inconsistent in drills but I think they can get that squared away. The kicks looked good in the air.
8) I think the D will be solid and hopefully that is what held the 1st team O down a bit.
9) This Iowa team will probably have to find a way to score 26 pts a game to be more successful than not.

That is what I took from the day. If I think of anything else I will post but this one is getting loooong in the tooth!

Any notice of CJ Hilliard out of cincinatti? I heard good things about him coming in. But he's been a ghost.

Agree.... that it looks like the D is way ahead every year - Do think the first two live 11-on-11 periods were scripted to be as tough as possible for the OLine. The LB's and SS were run blitzing 'correctly' almost every play and the backside corner blitzing into a boot roll-out is a no-win for the O... Did think the back 7 looked bigger, faster, quicker overall. Drew Ott is going to make a ton of $$ next year or our LT is going to need to find some confidence somewhere else ... that was a mismatch extreme
