The Ripple Effect

This team needs White to bring it every game. The team benefits in so many ways when White is aggressive on offense. When he drives to the hoop teams start to back off and look to assign help defense. This in turn allows others to have a bit more space...because the opposing defense has to respect Aaron. The passing lanes are better and the entire team gets in a better flow offensively.

When White is not aggressive help defense isn't needed. The opposing team plays closer to all 5 guys and the passing lanes close.

Aaron White is the key and Fran just needs to get on him in games when he disappears. White has to make the opposing defense respect dribble penetration for Iowa's odfense to succeed.

Whats up with him missing free throws anyway... He's been like a 50%er the last couple games. I don't think he's very strong mentally when the game isn't going his way. I'm sorry to say. His body language and effort is not the same in games where he and the team struggle...

It could be as simple as he is fatigued some. Our league schedule has been challenging to say the least and continues to be that way. We are not playing true bottom feeders night in, night out. The unbalanced schedule is going to skew records in the league as well depending on who you get once and where you get them.

White in the past typically misses free throws at the tail end of games when he is tired. I think his misses early also indicate he might be fatigued to some degree. He was not moving very well last night either getting out hustled for 50-50 balls/rebounds.

The majority of the team looked lathargic last night as well. A lot of energy has been exerted in league play so far.

My friends and I have wondered why he doesn't take over like he did in the Ohio State game since his Freshman year. I get that there will be nights where he is shut down. But, with Uthoff and White being similar players, it is difficult for defenses to guard them both. One of the two should be able to take over offensively.

White did drive to the hoop last night and was getting owned; that's why he quit doing it. You're not going to get the ticky tack calls at Kohl center that he has grown accustomed to. With no jump shot he's rendered pretty much ineffective. Problem with Aaron is he got away with being athletic clean up guy for so long that he never developed any other part of his game. You can't just put your head down, charge the basket and throw up some junk and expect to get the foul. Aaron could've been scary good had he developed a mid range jumper.

This is a good observation. I'm not going to claim I had the same thought but I agree with you. The team did look lethargic and it certainly didn't help that Wisconsin had 2 extra days. We did have the same advantage when we played at MN.

I noticed we were in position to get a lot of rebounds that we didn't get because we were out hustled to them.

It's funny that people think he can do whatever he wants but just doesn't for some reason.

He's actually a really easy player to guard and shutdown for most decent defenders.

No one can get away with just driving in the lane, unless your Lebron Circa 10 years ago.

The only ripple effect for this team is their shooting. They sucked in the last 18:30 of the first half last night. They shot like 20-25% in the first half which is why they fell so far behind.

I agree that the way White was driving on Ohio State the previous game was great and he needs to at least try it. If another player sags on him to help out he needs to dish quick to the open player.

But we still need to see 45% of shots consistently go down. Period and end of ripple effect.

His defender is the one sagging, you can't drive on some one who is not guarding you, have to shoot jump shots.

Heard Mike Hall / Jim Jackson on tonight's show quote Izzo after they got drubbed by Maryland.
(I might be paraphrasing a bit, here but)
"That was simply an inept performance tonight. I need my leaders to play better, all the time."

First thought ... I wish Fran would say this. Not to rub salt in the wound but because it needs to be said, publicly. It doesn't name names but the guys know who he means. It is just the right amount of ridicule and challenge to motivate. Guys like White and definitely Woody have responded to such "call outs" in the past. (Jury's still out on if Uthoff does or doesn't.)

Second thought ... I hate Tom Izzo and, at the same time, respect him as an awesome coach. He gets it that, at this level, you're still dealing with young men of varying degrees of maturity. Knowing how to get inside your players heads and push the right buttons can be a huge difference maker in college.

I hope Hawks' "leaders" get the message.

Perhaps not for everyone but I would say Nigel Hayes does a pretty good job of forcing contact.
