Jay Scheel - its on

Come on people. Of all schools hasn't Iowa proven just over the course of the last 10 years or so that you can win with either type of QB. Iowas won when they had a 5th string rb back there most of the year and they've won with Greene being the bell cow carrying the ball a ton. They've won with a Drew Tate and a Brad Banks and they've won with a Nathan Chandler. I think that the coaches think Rudock is the best of both worlds. He's not a statue back there and he's probably the most book smart kid he's ever had. I'm fired up to see what he can do going forward. As far as Scheel goes I don't know if he'll get a fair shot at it since the next two years he'll have Rudock there plus Beathard and Shimonek all with considerable more time in the program plus 3 other commits. I think it'll be a competition/numbers game problem with Scheel and if he wants to get on the field sooner it'd just have to be at another position. But if this August he comes in and his athleticism impresses he coaches and plays lights out you just never know..

Rudock might be the most book smart, but I think Tate is the smartest QB we've had under Ferentz.

Well Rudocks book isn't close to being finished yet. And Tates best year was arguably his first... He didn't necessarily get better awhole lot. His Senior year was a big step back. I don't know if saying Tate is the smartest holds up when he let his emotions get the better of him at times when he and the team wasn't playing well. Smart players can control that and use it as a good thing. Witch at times he did. But his Jr and Sr years not so much. Rudock is a cool customer and not only is that exactly what Ferentz prefers but it's what goes over better with the team. Time will tell if Rudock uses those book smarts to his advantage going forward but I think with the group they have he won't have alot of excuses not to be successful and get better.

Agreed. Tate wasn't the smartest QB for Iowa. He was the best at escaping pressure, and extending plays, but that had nothing to do with intelligence.....Vince Young was also great at this, and also not very smrt, as Homer Simpson would say.

He had a short temper, I'll give you that. But he was pretty good at reading coverages and such. Remember, he was also limited by injuries as a senior (so was Albert Young, and the receiving corps left a lot to be desired), so I don't hold that year against him too much.

I was going to say Arvell Nelson was the smartest quarterback of the Ferentz era, then I saw he is on the Pittsburgh Power of some inddor league.

I like Jay Scheel as a recruit, but winning the NICL 55m dash isn't something to get all excited about. Quikstats Iowa shows him with the 20th best 100m time in the state this spring....where do you suppose that places him in the Big 10?

A lot of poor memories in this thread ;)

Scheel will redshirt, I have little doubt about that. And I suspect QB is not in his future at Iowa.

He looks like a Canzeriish (yes I'll trade mark that phrase) type of player. He looks really quick and fast with the ball in his hands. Don't see him as a RB so much but maybe a utility guy that you can use on reverses, screens quick hitting creative plays that Iowa doesn't seem to be all that good at.... Maybe wildcatish package... I think there are alot of ways to use a kid like him. Hopefully in a couple years they'll find a role that gets him the ball in space to have some electric plays. Oh Timmy D where have you been??
