Steve Alford

You could post whatever stats you want - there is nothing there to show how great he is... he is average plain and simple.

And in the end I only care what he did at Iowa- and 85% of the people I know don't have fond memories of him.

Well I never said great. I said darn good and I don't think it would be that difficult to make the case he's better than average.

But I think it seems like your already changing your argument from he's an average coach to he was average at Iowa and I think your belief of him as a person clouds your perception of his coaching quality... But that's just my opinion.

I don't have or want to put the time and energy for the debate and looking up his stats...

But I know he's taken 4 teams to the dance. Won the Big ten tourney, PAC 12 tourney.

I'm willing to bet his overall record has a pretty high winning percentage.

I acknowledged earlier in this thread he hasn't had success in the big dance.

But it seems you want to pull out a few select stats to make your case.

I don't know why people like to talk so much about how horrible an individual is as a person, which seems to be the chief complaint about Steve Alford. Most people hate him, except his players and his family. I believe we all understand he is not very nice as a person. I've been convinced anyway.

As to his coaching stats, he's averaged 25 wins per season over the past 10 years, which includes his last 3 seasons at Iowa. I'd venture so say there are only about 10 coaches in the country who have done as well or better than that the past 10 seasons. It could get better.

For one Oh no... he is a big time A-hole... Basically he has been the golden boy his entire life.

I've heard this line repeated by 3 different people.. one who worked at Carver, my cousin who played women's basketball at Iowa, and one person in the private business industry (thought I've heard at least 5-7 other stories about his obnoxious entitled personality)

One of his favorite lines is "Do you know who the F**** I am?"

Now people can choose to believe me if you want.. call me a liar whatever - but its 100% true (this is aimed at the people who don't really believe he is a DB- not you gliding)

As far as being a coach and only 10 coaches better? seriously...the guy is like 9/9 in the NCAA tourney he has made it to the sweet 16 twice

in 25 years of coaching...

I'm not saying he is the worst... but only 10 better? not in a million years.

Alford was average as a Iowa coach... this entire thread has become bizarre beyond belief...

That's not why people don't like Alford.

I know so many people that have dealt with him in real life.

He is a grade A piece of S**** If you had any knowledge of this guy in reality trust me you wouldn't be even remotely defending him.

We are talking about him and his basketball team, because the OP clearly makes reference to that. Right??

Like I stated Alford is a good coach. You want to say he is terrible because you think he is a piece of **** go right ahead. I couldn't careless about that crap. Maybe he is a DB, but I'm talking about Alford the coach..

61-67 at Iowa conference record.... 1-3 in the NCAA... 1-3 in the NIT at Iowa.

That's darn good?

Perhaps it is for Iowa? And its better than our subsequent coaches (although I recognize comparing Alford to Fran is not apples to oranges). Maybe it is hard to win at Iowa.

Alford the coach isn't all that special... 9-9 in the NCAA... two sweet 16 appearances in 25 years of coaching.

90% of his success in nothing conferences (UCLA remains to be seen)

Average coach... egotistical maniac.. sucked at Iowa.

Don't see what there is too like really... I'm guessing some of this is people who liked him as a player. It's the only thing I can guess.

The UCLA fans didn't want him.

Big difference between "average" and "garbage."

Oh you mean those failures that even our current coach has in his career?

You make a statement about being a good game coach - alfred. i give an example to refute it. our current coach's game coaching ability is not involved with this thread - i don't think.

if you wish to make a claim about iowa's current head coach being a great game coach, that is probably another thread all in itself.

Like I said I could give a ****, never met the guy.. I did have some business dealing with the contractors who built his house and I was able to go in Alfords house a couple times, but never while Alford was around. That would have been year 3 I think. Anyway no biggie..

Clear many of you can't move on and that is your issue not mine.. After 7 years I'm over it.

This thread is in the Iowa Basketball Forum. :)

I really don't pay attention to him anymore.. was just responding so a few people (really very surprisingly to me) who were saying he is a good coach.

No, my point is that people aren't saying he's a garbage coach. They're saying he's an average coach, which isn't an unfair assessment, regardless of personal feelings regarding Alford's character.

He's an average coach. I love to see him fail because he's a ****** human being. The hatred runs much deeper than wins and losses, or even just his general arrogance.

He must of really did something terrible to you personally.

I've never met Alford personally so I will without judgement.

Very bad situation that was a handled poorly by many people at the University. Didn't affect me personally. Anything else?

Because it's irrational to hate someone who protected a rapist, even if the situation didn't directly affect you. The guy's a scumbag. You don't have to have met him to reach that conclusion.

Is it irrational to hate all those that piled into Carver and cheered on the both of them during the 2004 season? Perfect example of why keep bringing his name up!!
