I watched a considerable portion of the Wisky / NW game yesterday. Wisconsin is a very good football team. It will be a great match up, our run defense against their run offense. Their backs don't need alot of room and they seem to make the right cuts in all situations...it's very impressive. Stave will hurt you too...the guy stands in there and has a great arm. I know the B10 has gotten alot of crap for poor QB's but there are ton of young QBs in the league right now with very live arms...Hackenberg, Cook, Stave, Simeon, Sudfeld (Indiana)...and all are underclassmen with a few years or more to play.
Wisconsin gave the B10 the blueprint for beating NW. You have to send blitzes to force the quick throw and you have to play press coverage with your corners and maybe one safety. Can our corners play that type of defense consistently? It's usually not what we do, but if you don't, they dink and dunk you down the field and completely gas your defense by the 3rd quarter. The game was over at halftime as Wisconsin wore them down and NW had punted 10 times by the end of the third...Wisconsin's defense got off the field early and they were rested in the second half. I know we can take away NW running game, but can we consistently put pressure on the QB...then keep him contained.
Will Phil Parker play aggressive against Northwestern? I think we have to if we are going to win. If we sit back back and keep everything in front of us like years past, its a blueprint for a loss. Their offense is designed to do what you are giving them (short passing game)...all you are doing is making it easier for them.
