Houston we have a problem: Wisconsin

I watched a considerable portion of the Wisky / NW game yesterday. Wisconsin is a very good football team. It will be a great match up, our run defense against their run offense. Their backs don't need alot of room and they seem to make the right cuts in all situations...it's very impressive. Stave will hurt you too...the guy stands in there and has a great arm. I know the B10 has gotten alot of crap for poor QB's but there are ton of young QBs in the league right now with very live arms...Hackenberg, Cook, Stave, Simeon, Sudfeld (Indiana)...and all are underclassmen with a few years or more to play.

Wisconsin gave the B10 the blueprint for beating NW. You have to send blitzes to force the quick throw and you have to play press coverage with your corners and maybe one safety. Can our corners play that type of defense consistently? It's usually not what we do, but if you don't, they dink and dunk you down the field and completely gas your defense by the 3rd quarter. The game was over at halftime as Wisconsin wore them down and NW had punted 10 times by the end of the third...Wisconsin's defense got off the field early and they were rested in the second half. I know we can take away NW running game, but can we consistently put pressure on the QB...then keep him contained.

Will Phil Parker play aggressive against Northwestern? I think we have to if we are going to win. If we sit back back and keep everything in front of us like years past, its a blueprint for a loss. Their offense is designed to do what you are giving them (short passing game)...all you are doing is making it easier for them.

Not possible, Win. There is no way for a first year coach in the BIG to field a winning and good team. Just ask around.

Good summary by the OP I think as I mentioned some other things in another thread. I havent watched Wisky at all this year but they played some 3-4 and 3-5 with a safety down.

The OP is right that UW just pounded it at NW and early on NW's Dee was making some plays but they got the life sucked right out of them by the UW OLine.

And on defense UW was coming from all angles with their 3 down linemen and a variety of players from all positions. Now Colter and Mark got dinged which helped UW but it only would have made the score a little closer.

And you are right that you cant let them dink and dunk. Play tight and make them try hard throws.

NW receivers dropped more passes than usual cuz the passes were not as sharp and they were getting it right away.

The thing that is frustrating is Wiscy has a brand new coaching staff and they have not missed a beat. We are still trying to make Davis system work in year 2. Did Barry ever really leave?

Are you on crack? Didn't they run for 350 on us last year?

The DEE tackles are much better which is where it has to start, some pressure and disruption in the middle so that zone read handoff is not as clean.

The DEE ends are better on the edge and holding leverage.

The LBkers are solid to above avg.

The safeties and corners have to tackle well and play a great game.

But as the OP says if we play soft in pass coverage they will pick us apart and not need to run for 300 yards

Wisconsin's Gary Anderson is probably one of the most underrated coaches in college football. He was Urban Meyer's d-coordinator when Utah went on their unbelievable run. He defeated Alabama in 2008 in the Sugar Bowl when Utah finished #2.

He turned Utah State into a winner in just three years. Offensively, he runs the football, but in a smart way, modern way.

It is basically the exact same unit from last year, genius.

Wisconsin will shred Iowa. Gordon and White are impressive enough by themselves. But Abbrederis will probably be the best WR we see all year.

I think Abbrederis was concussed against NW. But if he's healthy...well, he's a very good WR playing against Iowa's secondary. The best defense we'll have is to not pressure Stave and let him throw dirt balls to him. Seriously, though, Abbrederis reminds me of another Welker/Amendola type that will stick in the NFL. Then, of course you're correct, there is Wisky's running game.

Whisky is for real. Not too worried about their passing game but will be interesting to see what they do against us in the run department.

You are Wrong, Carl Davis didnt start last year and didnt play that much and he is doing well against the run. I was talking about their play against the run.

LTP is better this year, so is Alvis as last year he was dragging his injured leg around.

OTT has more weight on him and is doing a good job holding his ground and leverage against the run. Cooper and others are giving the startes rest.

They were not good against the run last year as the line and runners were making contact with the Lbkrs 3-4 yards downfield.
