What changes next season so we are in the tourney?

What I saw from Clemmons this year was alot of frehman mistakes imo. He is a step quicker and more athletic than Gesell. You could see this when he takes the ball to the hoop where he usually has an easier time getting by the initial defender. Where Clemmons has to make the adjustment is after the first burst he needs to stay under control and make better decisions. He has shown an ability to distribute the basketball all season based on his 3 assists per game with backup minutes. That is impressive for a true freshman. Add another offseason of practice with coaches, a trip to europe to develop even more chemistry with his teammates and the ptl, I really think he will be a critical part of our success next year. I look for him and Gesell to be go to guys as this team develops. His handles will keep improving along with his bball IQ as do nearly all freshmen going into their sophomore seasons. People tend to focus to much on the mistakes he made and not enough on the positives he brought to the floor.

You need to post more often, good stuff!

I would not mind seeing Clemmons' minutes reduced a little next year. Not because I think he is a liability (he'll clean up the freshman TO's). Rather, I'd like to see him expend as much energy as possible on defense (in shorter increments) to make life miserable for the other team's PG.

To be honest I don't really feel Fran needs to reduce his minutes to accomplish this. Clemmons showed a willingness to play hard nosed defense already as a freshman. He did make some silly head scratcher fouls but I think he will actually see more minutes next year very much because of his willingness to defend. Defense is going to play a big role in who sees how much court time next year imo.

Jon would be fine. Not others. I really don't care about taking time off. We were not a bubble team. We were Nebby and MSU away from really getting consideration as a bubble.

I have been asked to decide whether or not Iowa was a bubble team. I believe they absolutely were a bubble team, and I submit the following evidence:

ESPN Bubble Watch: If you are not a bubble team, are you even mentioned? Iowa was also mentioned with Minnesota, who did make it into the tournament and was also considered soft down the stretch and their tourney inclusion was not necc a foregone conclusion.

Sports Illustrated Bubble Watch: This was from late February, before Iowa won three out of four to end the year and won their first round game

The most damning evidence for ILHawk comes from the mouth of the NCAA Committee Chairman himself: "The last teams out were, in no particular order, they were Alabama, Iowa, Kentucky, Southern Miss, Tennessee, Virginia,â€￾ NCAA selection committee chairman Mike Bobinski said Sunday night."

I rule in favor of ssckelley; Iowa was indeed a bubble team.

I just purchased Bob Knight's new book "The Power of Negative Thinking"...

I'm waiting for it to arrive in the mail because I sold my Kindle so I haven't read it front to back yet. However, I checked out the first few pages on Amazon and the comments he makes in those several pages immediately made me think of the Hawks this year. Do yourself a favor and check it out: The Power of Negative Thinking: An Unconventional Approach to Achieving Positive Results: Bob Knight, Bob Hammel: 9780544027718: Amazon.com: Books

In order to turn some of the Hawks narrow defeats this year into victories they need to learn how to limit their mistakes. Especially towards the tail end of the game. Bob Knight's perspective just makes that crystal clear.

Jok, Uthoff, Gesell, Marble: There's your perimeter scoring
Basabe, Woodbury, Oleseni: Interior defense, rebounding, scoring

We will be a force next year.

^^^Agree. Marble scored really well after his slump/injury.

For Gesell to comeback after missing 4 games and having a injury and score 13 and 9 in the big 10 tourney I think shows he could and should be a consistent double digit scorer next year.

If Jok and Uthoff are even 10% better shooters from the wing than Oglesby and McCabe then we really improve. We should be tall and strong in the lane.

Woody needs to become a consistent 10-12 pt a night scorer in flow of the half court Offense.

Basabe's jumper is getting very good and white will be a better shooter, I hope

What's missing from your breakdown? How about 1 or 2 players that can break down their defender and get to the basket? Maybe Marble? Maybe Gesell?

Iowa will improve enough to make the tourney. But without a consistent slasher, Iowa will be good but not a force.

Clemmons and Gesell can do this and showed it this year but not of course at a trey burke level. If we hit from the outside there will be less clogging the lane on us which really opens up the offensive opportuiities

I think Marble will improve his handles and shooting percentage going into next year. Defenders will have to respect his shot which will make it easier for him to drive to the basket. I could see him scoring 16 ppg next year.

Agree with this. Marble needs to start looking for the 3pt shot more, for the team and his own aspirations. It will make his drives more effective. Also, whether he's a PG or not, he needs to work on his PG skills. His versatility is his calling card and what makes him hard to guard. I think he puts in the work that is starting to be common with Fran's senior leaders and becomes the go-to guy we need.
