Penrith is out at UNI

Hopefully they can bring in another Iowa guy with the hunger to make UNI a top 10 team consistently.

I'm not sure if Doug will leave Iowa and he is still competing. As a former Panther wrestler I hope the first call they make is to Bill Zadick. I'm sure there will be interest from Mark Schwab, maybe Greenlee from Ohio, Tolly Thompson could be interested. I would love to see Terry Brands at the helm, but I don't think he would entertain the thought.

Mark Schwab was the first name that came to my mind. Thompson and Greenlee make sense as well. Didn't think of Bill Zadick. Does he want out of the OTC already?

Sadly, I see UNI losing its team pretty soon when the state schools athletic budgets have to operate without state funds within a couple of years. Damn Title XIX.

Not sure what title 19 is but I read earlier this week that UNI is already at the minimum number of men's athletic programs allowed by the NCAA. If they cut it they'd have to replace it with something.

Looking at their budget numbers I see no way that UNI stays Div I if the regents get their way. In fact, I doubt they will have the full number of scholarship football players if this goes through. Once that happens, the whole dept will have to make some tough choices.

I kind of figured that without looking at any numbers. If I had to guess I wouldn't think that any of UNI's sports can support even itself. The best bets would obviously be football and basketball, but I doubt they could.

I agree, especially after reading the Registers article last weekend. You can see that the end might be near for UNI wrestling.

I see this as a positive sign for UNI's wrestling future. Why would they move on from Penrith if the wrestling program was doomed anyway. Bringing in a new coach shows they still care about wrestling and want it to improve.

Kind of crappy if you ask me. Sign him to 3 more years before the season begins and wait until the 100K clause is up to let him go. I realize it's a business but it doesn't sound like the way that you treat a guy that's done so much for their program.

By the comments I received from Dannen in an email this morning they have no plans to discontinue the program or lower the level of competitiveness. If they wanted to discontinue the program or go DII why would they have fired Penrith? He had already steered the program to depths it had never seen, all they had to do was keep him on and they could have used all the excuses they wanted to to get rid of the program. I don't think that Dannen would have reached out to a bunch of former UNI wrestlers in an email asking for support, patience and help if there were plans to degrade the program. There have been several inquiries already about the position already and we are just 24 hours removed from the news. You can win at UNI it's been proven and I experienced it when I was there and this is a good job. I know that several donors to the program had threatened to stop giving if change a wasn't going to happen. They are going to go out and get the best that they can afford and I think they can get a great coach, I just hope they make a commitment to the program that hasn't been there since Briggs left or the new coach won't stay long if he is having success.

one question is will these kids stay some of these iowa coaches have got to me chomping at the bit to try and snag some of these wrestlers they will have to announce a new coach soon or announce the program is no longer!
Do you mean without scholarships? Do we have available scholly's?
I'm not familiar with UNI's squad enough to know who the standouts are.
I want UNI to succeed so I am not very supportive of swooping in and grabbing their top guys. Maybe I misunderstood.

I guess I'll add my 2 cents on this subject. First off USA says they are going to try the best to get the best available and keep the program running at a DI level. I BELIEVE him over just about anybody out there! He would know guys so don't doubt him!!! Ok now on to my thoughts on coaches: Would Love to see the Schaub brothers take it over and have a Schaub vs. Brands thing in the future but that is NOT likely. My second pick is former Iowa GREAT Mark Perry! Another coach that they would have a hard time getting out of Cal Poly. My 3rd pick would be the Zaddick family taking it over and having a similar thing to the Schaub thing.
Here's some more food for thought if they cut the program(which I don't believe they will) where do National Duals get moved to since its there for the next 3 for sure.

i believe usa for sure just a lot of signs are pointing that way i don't want to see the program go either but im just trying to see some positives in this to having only 2 dI programs in the state. make both schools very competitive because uni does get great kids and seems like sometimes they havent been able to thrive at the collegiant level and there have been MANY from this state who didn't do much at uni

Who on that roster do you think the coaches are really "chomping at the bit" to try and snag up?? I'm not sure that there are really any kids there that Iowa would be willing to offer a lot of money to. I'm not trying to be mean here but I really don't see a ton of big time talent on that roster anymore.

I wouldn't mind maybe seeing a kid like Loder at Iowa but there aren't too many others. They don't really have much room for Wolfy at that weight and who else do you really want? Honest question as this program has fallen a long way since the days when they had guys like Long, Tony Davis, Stender, etc...
