the kenpom.com blog

That pretty much explains what he does (though it's from 2006 so I'm sure he's tweaked his formula as pretty much ever statistician does),

If you're interested in what he does, the blog he writes is very good though I get the sneaking suspicion that Herby just wants to "arglebargle" over things he doesn't understand.

still didn't tell me much.
and like I asked if somebody that can explain it to me in English, part of my mathmatics to understand the terminology was lost to me.
i simply asked about some thing I know nothing about.
recruiting and how players are ranked is one thing I understand but this is out of my league

I'm not going to go through everyone else's schedule but my guess is, about 300 teams are playing teams that are better for the most part and they are not playing teams who are as bad as we are playing.

If we play teams who are in the 300's and the best team we play is ranked 49 while most other teams are playing teams in the top 20's with their worse being in the 200's, our schedule is not going to compare to well.

have you looked at Indiana's schedule, they just played Iowa next opponent Coppon St. as well as Cetral Conn St., Florida Atlantic and Mount St. Marys are their next 2 opponents,
they have played just 3 worth while opponents in Georgetown, UNC and Butler who they lost too., Iwould not exactly call that a muders row of opponents

Ranking players is something most people don't understand as it is subjective. In certain systems a player might be the best fit while in another system someone else is better fit. This means that according to these two the rankings would be different. This is the reason we should just look at the players that we get and not care how espn ranks them (or anyone else because that is pointless). According to all the rankings clemmons was a lower pg than gesell but from my eyes I see gesell as more of a 2 and clemmons as the better pg. It seems fran tends to agree as that is our lineup. Guess the rankings don't matter. Also garmon was a higher rank then weisman (as weisman was recruited as a fb) but I think weisman is better. And the season and coaches seem to agree.

Sos is all about who you have played and who you have beaten. Beat good teams and bad teams you get rated higher. Understanding the intricacies of the statistics is more for the mathematicians in the world. No mathematical system is perfect that is why it gets tweaked every yr. And I believe that many times the statisticians don't always agree with how their equations work out.

In the easiest method I can. Beat people and you go higher. Many factor in style of play and point differential and many other variables to get their final rankings. If you use the eye test you can tell we have had terrible ooc without knowing a ranking. I am not sure it is as low as the ranking says but it doesn't surprise me as the quality is not there. Once the b1g gets going our sos will sky rocket and the wins will mean a lot especially if we get upsets and don't lose to the likes of say a nebby or purdue or psu.

I would imagine that your own wins and losses don't have much to do with SOS. It's more about who your opponents have played and beaten.

thats 6 teams in the to 150 and 4 in the top 80 ewith 2 of those in the top 50
Iowa has only played 6 teams outside the top 250 and just 2 300 or above
if everybody they played had been over 200 I would understand but they haven't

SOS has nothing to do with who you have beat. It's just about who you played, and actually losing will help your SOS more than winning, ask any ISU football fan.

rhawk 55.. it's because it's the old saying garbage in and garbage out... especially until anyone has palyed anyone.

In less than a month and a handfull of games played Ken Pom, Sagarin and RPI will only, barely, begin making sense, predict future success and pass the eye ball test.

We love our numbers, our polls, our computers and our talking heads/stat geek guys... but it always comes down to ball players... playing and getting it done in real life and real time. For our pleasure and enjoyment forever.

It's all about your opponent's opponents. The outcome of the games and where the games were located. That's why you see so many lower tier teams with a good SOS.

The SOS ranking is relative to all the other teams so unless you know who the other teams have faced the numbers you posted don't really tell you much as far as a specific SOS number. If Iowa is 324 that means 323 other team have played a tougher schedule. Iowa could have played all top 100 teams but if 323 teams played slightly better teams the ranking would still be 324.
