You think CJ and King are playing

Where the hell does everyone get the idea CJ is even remotely close to being an NFL quarterback?

I made a post about this at the beginning of the season.. Beathard rated by some to be a 1st round draft pick, others 2nd to 3rd. Some actually had him as the best QB coming out. Mel Kiper had him as the NUMBER ONE SENIOR QB.
Mel kipper knows a thing about a thing... soooo.

But the way he has played this year his stock has fallen fast I'm sure.

What is wrong with Beathard? He certainly doesn't look like the same player. Was Vandeberg that big of a loss? Is he still hurt? Have the coaches put restraints on him? Not sure what's going on, something is different.

Keep something in mind regarding CJ. He is getting the worst QB coaching possible at a Power 5 level. Jake R moved on, went to Michigan, had a decent year and now is getting legit coaching in the NFL and has a role on a practice roster. Not a huge deal mind you, but to go where he was at, basically a ho-hum Iowa QB, to an NFL practice roster is incredible.

Put CJ on an adequate offensive coaching staff at the Power 5 level with average WR talent, he's probably having a very good year. The best thing for him right now is to get as far away from this staff as possible. They are not good with QBs period.

There is not a worse offense for a Qb or a receiver in the country! I have said that Iowa could have tom Brady at Qb and they would still suck. They need a new offense and thus a new coach.

Targeted? No. Dude, cmon. Yes he got beat by a TE in a mismatch and poor tackle attempt. But homie...only icky pants might agree with you... that's not a positive.

King is a first round pick...and is playing like it.

Stop.

how in the heck is it a mismatch? king was 5 yards away from the TE w

Right here, did your wife educate you a little to raise that football IQ?

Fine, King had 1 really bad play. Agreed. Turns out great players still mess up.

Best football player Iowa has and playing like a first round draft pick.

The answer to your question in your original post is no.

Your premise is off. It happens.

Lost his best 3 receivers from last year, pass protection shaky in first 5 games, 3-4 dropped passes per game, and Greg Davis....is what happened.

He hasn't been great, but he's getting almost no help from his OC or WR. CJ is probably #5 in the list of issues on Iowa's issues.

I agree that CJB is not one of the BIGGEST problems on the 2016 team. But playing Stanley is probably the #1 thing that can improve the 2017 team. You eventually have to accept that the next meaningful game an Iowa football team plays will be in September 2017 and start coaching as if this is true.

Ok. So I thought maybe this Arkansas guy is seeing somethin I am not so I just watched every defensive play (love DVR) and focused on King every time. My takeaways:

-Wisconsin threw at him 5 times, completing 2 passes.
-He stuffed Taylor at Wiscy's 6 yard line with 7 minutes left in 2nd quarter, setting up Iowans first FG.
-He did miss the tackle on Peniston's long play because he was trying to strip ball. (Trying to make play like arkansashawk wants, should've just made tackle.)
He jumps on pile 2 plays later (looked like max effort to me)
He makes up for missed tackle shortly when he recovers the fumble in the endzone. (#Playmaker)
he tackled Houston on 3rd down, which would have forced punt if not for friendly spot and no measurement.
On Clement's long run late, he comes from the opposite side, through the backfield, around the play, chases it all the way down 35 yards down the field, and is in on the tackle. If that isn't effort, what is?
He had 2 tackles at the LOS, and 2 tackles for 3 yard gains, which is far from normal for CBs.
I would wager that there is not a better tackling CB in all of college football.

I saw none of these so-called get beat and run play down from behind.

I will thank you though. When you first made this thread, I thought "no way, King is awesome and this guy is drunk."

Now, after rewatching every single play again, I think, "King is freaking super awesome, and this guy is on crack."

EXACTLY.

Yes, he made a bad play on that long pass play. He tried to swat/strip the ball, whiffed, and paid the price. But he made up for it almost immediately by recovering the fumble.

And yes, maybe if King tries to wrap up Houston on 3rd down (instead of shoulder tackle), he stops the QB from getting that extra half-yard/yard. But he still made the open field tackle. Houston just happened to roll over him, and get a generous spot (with no measurement).

Statistically, last season through October, King had 36 tackles (24 solo and 12 assisted). This season (counting Wisconsin), he's had 41 (26 solo and 15 assisted). Hell, he had 12 tackles against Wisconsin. In terms of tackles-for-loss, he had 1 TFL all season. He's credited with 1.5 through the Wisconsin game.

He's definitely down with regard to interceptions, but teams have been avoiding throwing in his direction all season if they could help it. Still, last season at this time, he had 7 passes-broken-up. He's had 6 this season (not counting Wisconsin). His passes defended (I honestly don't quite understand the nuance between PBU and PD) is down from 14 last year at this point, to 7. But again, he can't really force incompletions if the QB doesn't really throw to his receiver.

His kick and punt return yards per return are up on kickoffs (28 yards/return this season minus Wisconsin vs 22 yards/return through October 2015) and slightly down on punt returns (9 yards/return this season minus Wisconsin vs 13 yards/return through October 2015).

King has played really well this year, and at no point have I thought "Hmm...King is really phoning it in." Other than the (understandable) lack of interceptions, I just don't see it.

Apparently, only one person seems to think King is slacking off.

I love the fact that this guy calls out King for "not making plays" and the one mistake he made all day was because he was trying to make a big play instead of a normal tackle.

Oh, come on. Respond to my game rewatching post. Now I would like you to show me 1 example of this "no effort, disinterested " King that only you can see.

He put a lot of faith in these coaches by coming back, and they continue to disappoint. I really feel bad for him and hope that he does finally start to pack it in for himself because the team is done.

That King might feel a bit disappointed and let down for staying for this sinking Iowa ship would be understandable...

Still waiting for this beautiful football mind you have to tell me what more King should be doing right now other than "score more touchdowns."

I'll go with ..... 'He's still hurt' ... what was called a 'knee sprain' in camp could be anywhere from a sprain that hasn't had time to heal to a slight meniscus tear that they are trying to work with. He does not have the same 1st step when he scrambles. Also yesterday - at least 5 times he gave to tailback in I formation w/ a fullback and doesn't carry out bootleg action - did that all the time last year - which setup the boot or froze the backside end from making the tackle. I'll go with he's not the same from the waist down. Makes it tough to do all you want to do.

Outside of King trying to strip the football all of the time, instead of making the tackle, his leadership is noticeable on the field.
Outside of King, we don't have Power 5 conference at SS/FS/DB.
Almost longing for the days of Adam Shada.

A QB is only as good as his receivers. Last year he had 4 reliable targets and this year with vandeberg out and kittle being in an out he doesn't really have any. I'm also assuming the knee and knee brace is limiting his ability to make plays with his feet.

Iowa needs to recruit two qb's every year and then play each one for one year so Kirk doesn't get a chance to destroy him. This is the 3rd straight qb he's done it to.

Tate
Stanzi
Vandy
Rudock
CJB

All FIVE had fewer wins their final year than the previous season.
