WR's in the Greg Davis system

Sounds like Greg Davis is pretty serious about using at least 6-7 WR's regularly in his system.

Here is who I see filling those WR slots:

Locks to play:

Keenan Davis
K-Mart
Don Shumpert
CJ Fed
Zach Derby

Other Possibilities:

Steven Staggs - possession guy who had a few catchs last year
Maurice Fleming - exciting true Freshman who will most likely play this year
Jordon Cotton - Got some playing time last year - might play a bigger role this year
Jacob Hillyer - Another true freshman who might see the field
Damon Bullock - depending on the emergence of Garmon at RB he could play in the slot
Ray Hamilton - talented enough to get some serious playing time

CJFed and Derby are TEs, you can't include them as WR. I think he's going to use 6-7 WR plus the 2 TEs in which you need to include Hamilton because he will be better than Derby. Also I think Davis loves speed so I could see Flemming getting reps as well as Tevaun Smith. I think Bullock will stay at RB no matter what happens with Garmon. Also I think the freshman, Mabin and Wilson could get some time.

Can we expect to see a lot of short slant type patterns or short quick crosses across the middle and to the sidelines by our WR's in Davis' system? I don't recall what he did with them while at TX.

RS Freshman

Also, i dont think Zach Derby is going to be the #2 TE for very long. Sounds like Hamilton HKC are doing well in practice.

I'm just thankful we have Erik Campbell who I believe is most responsible for Iowa actually having a group of WRs that may actually be able to go more than 3 deep.

This is also the biggest group of WRs I remember Iowa having.

Davis 6-3
Martin-Manley 6-0
Shumpert 6-3
Hillyer 6-4
Fleming 6-0
Smith 6-2
Staggs 6-3
Mabin 6-2
Wilson 6-1

I agree about Campbell and the size of the receivers, but we know Davis likes the fast guys, like Fleming, and he utilized a lot of "shorter" receivers at Texas too. I think we will see more of a mix in the future of size and speed.

Yes, that was extremely common at Texas. They ran a lot of short routes, screens, etc. Ball got out of the hands of the QB quickly for the most part.

I'm not sure what to expect from GD but I am hoping it is at least a little different than what we saw from KOK. I know we aren't going to be looking at a full scale overhaul of the offensive system but I would like to see some more shotgun formations and no huddle, which GD seems to be bringing to the table. I also hope to God that if we are facing a 3rd and 8 we don't try to run it up the gut or have our receivers run 6 yard routes, something that was pretty common under KOK.

I'm also hoping GD opens the playbook wide and just lets loose. His exit from Texas was less than ceremonial and hopefully he feels he has something to prove.

I think we will see a lot of Maurice Flemming over the next few years... remember all those slot guys that did so well at Texas? Quan Crosby, Jordan Shipley... etc.. I think he is that exact type of player they are trying to get out of him. Now he needs to not fumble anymore first.

Perhaps the most athletic also, albeit young?

I seem to remember another true freshman receiver that got playing time right away and tore it up. Would have been one of the better receivers in school history had he not of ****ed up. Thanks Dougie Fresh...

I think Fleming is a similar type of receiver, quick and shifty. Those are the ones GD likes, hope he can contribute. Not sure how his knee is doing these days, but hope good. Still need the deep threat and the big physical receivers as well.

I think Staggs is also a lock, Bullock will stay at RB, and the rest will all figure in at some point during the season.

Unless/until players "lock down" a spot, we will see a lot of different receivers during the first two or three games. If a guy hasn't secured PT by the third game, he will be strictly emergency or intentional redshirt situation.

I think they are counting on Duzey to provide some quality snaps too. He creates a ton of match-up problems in the passing game and may be used some when Davis decides to split a TE out wide.

From everything I've heard, Fleming is a lock. Hillyer also sounds like he'll get solid PT. This will be a fun position group to watch this year.

This thread got me thinking, and I thought I would do some digging to see what we could expect from the Greg Davis system based on what he did at Texas.

Here are the last 4 years at Texas and a small breakdown of the # of players who look to have played a lot, the minimum # of catches and the lowest avg. of the group.

If somebody wants to expand a bit on this and get even further into it, please do so.

With McCoy as QB:
’07 – 7 players with at least 17 catches for the year – all had an avg. of 9+ yards per catch – 4 WR’s, 2 RB’s, 1 TE fit the criteria.
’08 – 6 players with at least 17 catches for the year – all had an avg. of 9+ yards per catch – 6 WR’s, 1 RB, 0 TE’s fit the criteria.
’09 – 6 players with at least 30 catches for the year – all had an avg. of 9+ yards per catch – 6 WR’s, 0 RB’s, 0 TE’s fit the criteria.

With Gilbert as QB:
’10 – 6 players with at least 24 catches for the year – 5 of 6 had an avg. of 10+ yards per catch – 5 WR’s, 1 RB, 0 TE’s fit the criteria.

This being said, I think we will see at least 5 WR’s be counted on to play each game and to be targeted in their particular packages. As far as throwing to the TE goes, I think CJF could be split out more than we think due to the lack of Greg Davis getting the TE the ball in his time at Texas. I would be really excited if he does find a way to get CJF and the other TE’s the ball out of our regular Pro-Style look though too. That will need to happen to keep our running game from being tipped off each time are not 4-5 wide.

If Davis is serious about 6-7 WRs playing (and I believe he is) then these are the guys you can expect to see (IMO):

Davis
KMM
Fleming
Staggs
Shumpert
Hillyer
Cotton

Fleming, Shumpert, Hillyer, and Cotton have all been creating some positive buzz, and those names (save for Fleming) came up frequently at media day.
