WR's in the Greg Davis system

This thread got me thinking, and I thought I would do some digging to see what we could expect from the Greg Davis system based on what he did at Texas.

Here are the last 4 years at Texas and a small breakdown of the # of players who look to have played a lot, the minimum # of catches and the lowest avg. of the group.

If somebody wants to expand a bit on this and get even further into it, please do so.

With McCoy as QB:
’07 – 7 players with at least 17 catches for the year – all had an avg. of 9+ yards per catch – 4 WR’s, 2 RB’s, 1 TE fit the criteria.
’08 – 6 players with at least 17 catches for the year – all had an avg. of 9+ yards per catch – 6 WR’s, 1 RB, 0 TE’s fit the criteria.
’09 – 6 players with at least 30 catches for the year – all had an avg. of 9+ yards per catch – 6 WR’s, 0 RB’s, 0 TE’s fit the criteria.

With Gilbert as QB:
’10 – 6 players with at least 24 catches for the year – 5 of 6 had an avg. of 10+ yards per catch – 5 WR’s, 1 RB, 0 TE’s fit the criteria.

This being said, I think we will see at least 5 WR’s be counted on to play each game and to be targeted in their particular packages. As far as throwing to the TE goes, I think CJF could be split out more than we think due to the lack of Greg Davis getting the TE the ball in his time at Texas. I would be really excited if he does find a way to get CJF and the other TE’s the ball out of our regular Pro-Style look though too. That will need to happen to keep our running game from being tipped off each time are not 4-5 wide.

To be fair regarding TE usage at Texas, they haven't had strong TE's in a long time. They haven't had a good one since Jermichael Finley in 2007. But Davis has had David Thomas, as well as Finley, who posted good numbers in his scheme. When Davis has good TE's, he utilizes them. And he's said several times that he's never had a TE like CJF before.

because fleming is a frosh?

Not sure if you were replying to my post, but yes. Nobody was voluntarily singling out any of the freshmen, and only Soup really talked about him when pressed to. But everybody has known Fleming is making noise, so most of us were trying to get them to talk about him, and they knew that.

yes tm i was talking about your post. sorry probably should quote next time!

I'm not sure what to expect from GD but I am hoping it is at least a little different than what we saw from KOK. I know we aren't going to be looking at a full scale overhaul of the offensive system but I would like to see some more shotgun formations and no huddle, which GD seems to be bringing to the table. I also hope to God that if we are facing a 3rd and 8 we don't have try to run it up the gut or have our receivers run 6 yard routes, ,something that was pretty common under KOK.

I'm also hoping GD opens the playbook wide and just lets loose. His exit from Texas was less than ceremonial and hopefully he feels he has something to prove.

I'm excited about GD, but based on comments from Texas fans, that's one thing I'm worried about.

I got very frustrated with KOK on occasion, but I hope some remnants of play-action will be a part of GD's system.

I think that because we kept the running game essentially the same with the zone blocking scheme and all that you can bet on seeing the PA pass a lot still.

You can't do it all the time, but during Fry's tenure Iowa had a lot of success running it up the gut on longer 3rd downs. Also, Brad Banks was pretty effective at it in 2002.
