Sands being afflicted with a illness this is classless leaving this way IMO. Always thought he was a flake but never thought he'd quit when things got tough.

The Grinch finally bails.....wonder if his crappy team had much to do with it.

While I found his candor to be somewhat refreshing, the way he dis'd Uthoff is all I need to know about his true self.

B1G channel is gushing all over him....please.

He is a curmudegeoned elf who as a grown man cried his way to wins. John Wooden would be ashamed of the antics of many of the current coaches who are prima donnas.

I have no time for their histrionics, Fran included sometimes in this area.

Wanted to retire in the summer but the man he wanted to replace him was had a father diagnosed with brain cancer and died 2 months after being diagnosed. Said in the presser he couldn't burden Greg Gard with new coach of young team under those circumstances. He stuck around for Gard to get his house in order

this was all addressed in presser

His team is in the tank and Ryan is too much of a baby to deal with it. He's using the Gard thing as a convenient excuse to give up on his players and quit. If he could wait six months for Gard to get ready could he not be a man and wait 3 more months to retire at the end of the season? Perfect example of a career whiner who can't take heat when things don't go his way.

I have some swampland in Florida if you're interested.

I can't stand Ryan. But he wanted to leave in April and reconsidered at the AD's request. Then he stayed out of loyalty to his top assistant. It sounds like leaving after 1st semester was always the plan. He's gone and I won't miss him...but I honestly don't believe he bailed because of the team's record. It's more likely the team's record is a result of the fact he knew he was going to leave and wasn't quite as invested...and losing 2 first round draft picks was a major factor as well.

Assuming there is nothing medical driving the decision, this is a horrible way to go out. I'm sure he looked at his team and realized they were not that good, and didn't want other BIG teams getting revenge on him, so better to quit first.

Also glad he's quitting before they come to Iowa City, because I was fearful that Iowa might acknowledge his retirement and give some tribute, which would have made most fans sick.

I don't think this was reason for concern. Fran and Uthoff might have framed a sign that said "Don't let the door hit you...on your way out!"

100% chicken **** douchebaggery. If you're going to coach a team then coach a team. Knowing that you're leaving mid-season but not saying anything makes him more of a POS than if it were spur of the moment. Those kids playing ball come to that school expecting a reasonable amount of stability as well as support from their coaches. They also deserve the coach's commitment to the program. This isn't the NBA where players and coaches can come and go as they please and still collect their paychecks. How would you feel as a parent if you found out your kid's senior year that the coach quit giving a **** about basketball and had been planning to quit all year?

A multi million dollar public employee can't bear to give 3 months more of his time? Baby Bo's stress is soooooooo high that he just can't take it anymore and has to drop a bomb on an already struggling program in the middle of the season?

I hate Wisconsin as much as anyone, but you can't seriously be trying to rationalize what this idiot's doing.

Surprised Alvarez didn't just take over coaching duties. He has a history of doing that for the football program and coaching their post seasons maybe he should give basketball a shot.

The AD supposedly knew. When I retire I will tell my boss. It's no one else's business. I'm not rationalizing anything. I remember what Ryan said back in April. He was going to retire. Everything I'm reading matches what I know about the situation (public stuff...nothing insider at all) going back to last April. I don't care enough about Wisconsin or their coaching situation to talk about this anymore.

He said he was going to retire. Which Bo Ryan knew people would interpret as meaning after the season. Which is deception.

Most importantly, no one in his or her right mind would believe that Ryan would quit right now if his team was undefeated or had maybe one loss. He gave up. And crapped on his players.

I agree with you that Wisconsin BB is not worth an argument over. I'm just a proponent of calling a spade a spade and Bo Ryan's an insufferable, selfish *****.
