would you fire Rich Rodriguez? if you were Michigan

I think I might give him another year - they get even a below average defense in there they could get scary.

What do you guys think?

One more season. I realize the expectations and tradition are different at meatchicken than they are at Minny and Indy, but even with that, DickRod did better this season than brewster and lynch.
Throw in zooker @ 6-6, who appears safe at illannoy, and I say DickRod sticks around for 2011.

Yes, simply because I would have never hired him in the first place. Running the spread isn't Michigan football imo. Your talking about a program that has consistently put the big strong pocket passing QB in the NFL. They always were built like an NFL team. They had top receivers, big strong NFL lineman and a cast of NFL running backs. It's not like they didn't have a ton of success before Rodriguez. IDK, it just doesn't look like Michigan football to me. It's kind of gimmicky I guess. Back to Rich Rod, yes I would fire him. He has given that program 3 of it's worst years ever and not to mention put them under NCAA investigation for the first time ever.

I definitely wouldn't fire him. His offense is working as intended, and he's got the personnel in place for that offense for 2 more years. Don't they have a blue-chipper redshirting behind Forcier too? Gardner, or something like that?

Agree with the OP...get them a defense that can finish near the 50% line in the NCAA and the B10 West gets that much tougher.

You lose nothing by keeping him...

Another disappointing year and he can get canned, and you are able to say, the guy improved for three straight years but year four just wasn't enough.

If he improves again next year to a 9 win team, then you can talk about how the team keeps getting better.

But it seems like everyone wants hm gone.

depends if they can get Harbaugh. Rumor is Harbaugh may go to the NFL (49ers or Carolina). Les Miles isn't an option, he has a 18.5 million dollar buyout. The most likely hire would be Brady Hoke, that doesn't really exite most people....

i'd only fire him if i had a surefire guy ready to sign like a harbaugh or some other big name head coach.

I think he is done. His behavior at their football banquet, pretty much confirms it. I think their AD will wait until after Jan.1 however, as the big blu will save 1.5 million vs. canning him before.

Their AD has been rumored to be talking to other coaches agents already to see who has interest. After the Josh Groban lovefest, RR is the laughingstock of College Football, and they are starting to lose recruits due to the uncertainty of him being back.

If their AD doesn't can him at this point, I think I'd be calling for his head if I was Michigan fan.

I am actually kind of surprised by the responses here. I thought everyone would say they would fire him. As for the quoted, it is pretty dead on. Les Miles will not coach at Michigan, not just because of his buyout. When he was at Michigan, he made a lot of enemies including Lloyd Carr. There was speculation LC had an illness while still coaching and Les used that to negatively recruit against Michigan. Also, Miles had an affair with Gary Moellers wife so there's that. Besides, that, he's not an elite coach IMO. Harbaugh is but I have a concern on the long term. Harbaugh looks like an NFl guy in the long run. I think he will go there. Michigan isn't a team that wants a bunch of turnover in coaching. Honestly, they are one wrong hire away from being Notre Dame.

As for RR, there is no doubt in my mind that given some time, he can get this program back to being elite. How much time is the question. I have no idea. Right now, I look at what 2012 could be. They could be very good. They will have every player from their current secondary, two linbackers, and two D-end that played a lot. If they can find someone to coach them (Jeff Casteel please) they could be very good. Oh yeah, and Denard will be a senior. I think that's the year they really break through but I think they could be in the mix for the Big Ten next year anyway. The schedule is favorable.

For me, What this comes down to is this: Can Harbaugh get this program to the top before RR? I don't think so. I know RR has struggled but there has been consistent improvement in terms of results. I don't think Harbaugh can come in and make this team a Big Ten Champion next year, which I think is the next step. RR can get there first.

As for what RR has done to the program. I think people overlook what happened to the program in 2007. If you look at the season and not just the bowl game I htink you have to say the downturn started there. They returned everyone on offense and had a solid defense but were very average. RR didn't come in fresh off a BCS bid. He came in after one of the most disappointing seasons in the history of the game. I also would say the Big Ten has gotten much better since he started. This years Big Ten is significantly better than the Big Ten of 2007. I realize that doesn't matter in terms of results, but I think it gives some perspective as to where the program was in reality. Also, if you look at how many players Michigan was putting in the NFL in Lloyds last few years, it was somewhat unimpressive.

I really just wish Brandon would make a decision. I see no positive that will result from him waiting until after the bowl game. It will hurt recruiting significantly. It may have already taken their best player.

Things probably can't get any worse for them. I might give him one more year.

But their defense has gotten worse in all three seasons, the three worst Michigan defensive performances of all time.

It's not Robinson's fault.

I think this offense is a bit of a square peg in this league, because people actually play defense in this league. Their offense is capable, but an offense that strikes that quickly is always going to put more pressure on its own defense because it will be on the field more.

if they could just be a 60th or so defense nationally, they'd be in business. You'd think they could do that. But the 3-3-5 is not the answer, and Rich Rod made the switch to that, not Greg Robinson.

If they make a change now, they look for someone like a Harbaugh that is going to play a more traditional brand of Big Ten power football, what Michigan did for years...and it will take a few years to build that back.

I would like to hear who these coaches are.

Losing Dee Hart is a killer for UM's class. RR needs to ax Greg Robinson and ditch that 3-3-5. Get a real DC and UM can be more viable as a B10 contender.

That defense has also gotten younger in each of those years. A defense is a defense. Either you get off the field or you don't. With the offense like it is, their defensive stats will always be somewhat inflated, but a good defense is a good defense. That is independent of what the offense does. Schemes are also greatly overrated.

I agree with this. I don't care what scheme they run but he has to go hire the best DC they can find and give him the reigns. He has been much to involved. Greg was put in a very tough position because he has to coach something he has never coached before and he couldn't do it. Jeff Casteel has to be the first target. He's the WVU coordinator who was with RR. If he can get him, they can turn it around.

That may not have happened either. There never anything official on it and Michigan was down there yesterday I believe to talk to him. Word is that he, at least right now, is still Blue, but obviously it's soft and will depend on RR being kept or fired. He wants to go to Michigan, there isn't doubt of that, but with all the indecision, he isn't going to be solid. He's also an EE so Brandon waiting on the decision really influences his decision.

No, I wouldn't. Their offense moved the ball well on everyone in the B10 except for OSU.

The have two QBs who run their system well.

Get a DC in there that can field an average defense.

Personally, I hope they fire him and return to old school Michigan football. Iowa matches up with that style better than the spread.

I wouldn't. If they get a decent defense they probably become the Oregon of the mid west and seeing that it's Michigan that could happen.

They probably have to take the weight off of a running QB though because there is no way that he will stay consistently healthy in this league.
