Would this scenario change your mind??

I have said in a previous thread that Ben Jacobson is not in my top 3, however I wouldn't be upset about the hire... What if this scenario happened? Would you change your mind?

UNI wins the next two games and gets to the final four. With all of the added publicity Jake will get as a coach, and the final four on his resume, he would probably have a number of big time players who would want to come and play for him at UNI.

Keep in mind that recruiting has not been a drawback to Mac at ISU, it has been his inability to make in-game adjustments that have killed him at ISU, and it wasn't very good when he was at UNI... notice not being able to beat any decent teams while there. So I am pretty sure that Jake would be able to recruit some extremely athletic kids to come to Iowa.

So.. the question is this... If Jake were to get to the final four this year... would that change your mind?

With me... if he gets there, he would be my top candidate.... if they end in the sweet 16.. him and the Panthers had a great run, but my top 3 remain the same.

UNI could play for the national title and I still think it would be a huge mistake to hire him. One, two, or three emotional wins does not make Jake a good hire for Iowa. We have been down this road with Lick and Alford, the resumes are nearly identical. Iowa needs a RECRUITER, end of story. We do not need to go hire a coach that dominated the weakest Missouri Valley league in the last decade...no thanks.

EXACTLY!!!!!!! I said the same thing on another thread...George Raveling recruiting with Tom Davis know how.

Whether Jacobsen wins his next game or gets to the final four, that is not going to change who he is as a coach. He either deserves to be considered by Iowa or not. I think he does, but I think many would not enjoy his style of play and would question if he could recruit and the high major level. I think his coaching speaks for itself.

I think you are overreacting to one 2-3 week period of success, hypothetically speaking, of course. I don't see any "big-time players" who would want to come play for him at UNI. It is still UNI. They take the kids the big boys don't want. And clearly it has worked for them this year. Harrison Barnes, and any other top player is not going anywhere outside of a BCS program. It Never happens.

I agree with 20 here. Since MSU cannot win the title without Lucas I will root foe UNI Thursday. But for me it's more about recruiting ability than anything else. If I knew what he would have planned there and felt that was a good plan, that is what could change my mind...not a run in March

Wouldn't change my mind at all. Why would anyone think differently of him if he went out in the first round or the final four?? The players win the games. I don't think Jac had a lot to do with the players yesterday. He runs a good program and can coach I just don't put him at the top of my list for Iowa. With that said I wouldn't be unhappy with him either.

I think Jacobson would recruit really well here. He has recruited really well at UNI and that is at a mid major. I like the way he connects with his players even in pressure situations. Did anyone catch that look he gave O'Rear after he airballed that freethrow? Most coaches would have gave the player a look of disgust or shook their head, Jacobson made eye contact with O'Rear and smiled. O'Rear kept his head in the game and played very well. I want a coach that not only can recruit but can connect with these kids like that.

I agree 100%.

Signed,
Todd Lickliter and Steve Alford

i appreciate optimism and faith.

However, Jacobson has never recruited at the level he'd have to recruit at to be successful at Iowa. Not ever, in his career. So what you are basing this off of is blind faith. We've been down this road before. When you compare what Jacobson has done to other solid mid majors in the dance this year and the resumes of their coaches, there is a HUGE hole lacking in Jake's resume, and that is putting in time as an assistant at a high major program, which means knowing what it takes to recruit to a high major program because you know what you are up against. He's never done that. Nor had Alford. Nor had Lickliter. We've been there and done that and we are in a nuclear winter situation right now because of it.

Based on that logic, how the heck has any mid major coach ever made the jump? There are an entire list of coaches that made the jump, some pretty big names. Are you going to write off every mid major coach just because of our bad experience with TL?
