Would Oglesby Been the Difference?

I am not ripping JO when I ask this, how so you call him a shooter when there is little evidence to back it up, he has yet to prove a capable shooter. I like everything about his game except for his shooting, but calling him a shooter without him showing capable is a stretch.

I guess my question really comea down to how do you define a player as a "shooter"

the defense determines who shooters are. White isn't a shooter because they don't stop him from taking 3s. When JO is in the game they are told to fly at him and keep him from taking the 3. I would guess it is the same for McCabe. Jok will be too but he will also have a better ability to get to the rim so they may not fly as hard at him.

For most of the game, yes. But Jok would have been picking splinters the entire game, and that would have been a plus.

Josh might have gone 0-for-2 from three, but he wouldn't have turned the ball over twice in 8 minutes, or play awful defense. Jok did.

First, you dont' know that. Second, based on last year there's absolutely no evidence he would've hit anything late. Third, it's insane to speculate because we didn't have him and we have NO idea if he'll hit the broad side of a barn when he returns.

Now oglesby is going to be the savior?! I thought it was Basabe? Or was it Woodbury? Or was it utoff? Or was it Jok?

JO is better defensively. It does not matter if he hit "the broad side of a barn" because Jok did not make anything either.

Im taking Frans word for it

I haven't read this thread just the initial question posed by Kelley. I like JO and think he will help us. The thing I want to see moving forward is every effort to have Uthoff or White shooting FTs at the end of close games. Also, McCabe having a less than stellar shooting night rather than being completely off also tips the scales. I think it was a fluke and not an indication of how the season will play out moving forward. No worries here!

That is the other part that can help Iowa moving forward. JO can handle the basketball and is a great free throw shooter.

I should have known better to start this thread after all the JO bullcrap from last year. Everyone instantly wants to jump all over his shooting, or lack thereof, but defensively he much better than Jok is right now. It seemed like every time Iowa was going to put ISU away Naz Long was draining a 3 to put them right back in it. Jok only played 8 minutes which put more pressure on Gesell and Marble and missed 2 three pointers. If he is not hitting his shot then he is a liability on the court right now, if JO is not hitting his shot he still contributes to the team.

This is exactly why I didn't read the thread and just responded. I was willing to bet everyone went after JO. I really liked McCabe coming into this season and still do. I also like JO coming into this season. Most seniors take it up a notch since it's there last go of it...one reason for McCabe love from me.

I like JO's overall game. I suspect he will shoot better with other shooters on the team and the improved overall scoring ability of this team...less pressure and more room for error. I do think JO is a guy that will make a huge bounce up going into next year...a senior with one last chance to leave it all on the court.

That is why I suggested that Iowa should have had Clemmons on the floor instead of McCabe, only because McCabe had the worst game of his career. Clemmons can handle the ball and get it to Uthoff and White, when ISU stepped up the pressure, I would have liked to see him be the guy at halfcourt being able to attack the press, instead of McCabe getting it and just getting is across the floor. This is no crucifixion of McCabe, just the situation as Iowa still had some capable 3-pt shooters on the floor at the time as well. That is the beauty of having the depth, each situation and players on the floor at times can be different.
FYI, it actually hasn't been too bad on the JO bashing. As I have stated before, I don't understand the ripping of him as he hasn't proven in games he can consistently perform, but I love the rest of his game. The only thing he struggles with is shooting, but I think people take frustration out on him is because of all that comes from Fran and if that is the reason, just watch him as I say a lot as well.
