Would Oglesby Been the Difference?

Ogles by plays good wing defense at that was missing. Plus he is a shooter...I get he had a bad yr last year but experience in a game like that helps and he has it while jok didn't.

I am not ripping JO when I ask this, how so you call him a shooter when there is little evidence to back it up, he has yet to prove a capable shooter. I like everything about his game except for his shooting, but calling him a shooter without him showing capable is a stretch.

I guess my question really comea down to how do you define a player as a "shooter"

True. No one said anything about not playing him at the end of a game. Aside from the typo of 60% and 67%, the point stands. It is what it is even if Gesell's numbers are light.

You can't have your two guards shoot under 70% (or 7-13 in a specific game) and expect to win tight games.

Exactly. Look at the clones. Their guards shot 4-11 from the line.

To be fair, the way a player gets experience in games like that is to get experience in them. Jok had a terrible night, and it would have been great if Ogs was available.

I think the way we use Jok and Ogs this year is we test them both out in the first half to see if either of them gets something going. If either/both of them do, you'll see them get quality minutes. If not, they'll ride the pine. Additonally, you'll see Ogs come in late in close games where we have a lead for the D and the FTs.

I would say that the opponent often defines/decides who is or is not a shooter. By that I mean, do they respect him with their defense or not? Most teams respect JO enough to put a man on him and not allow him to sag/help as much on defense. You could see that when ISU had an open lane to drive from the wing or baseline. Iowa had to respect their shooters enough to not be able to give help like they would have had the person they were defending not been identified as a shooter. Again, most teams respected JO enough last year, despite his %, which allowed things to be opened up. I would guess it's not a coincidence or a mistake on JO's part that he camps in the helpside corner while the others are passing and cutting on ballside. By him being there, he takes the helpside defender out of the lane or at least makes the defense decide whether or not they want to play helpside or defend JO and the 3.

Exactly. Hawks guards miss five FTs in last three minutes. 7-13 for the game. I don't expect to win those games. Do you?
Do I expect to win games where we miss the three most crucial FTs and the buzzer beater in the game? Of course not. If we made those shots, we would have won. We didn't so we lost. Would I rather had Utoff shooting Marble's one-and-one? Of course. But Marble created the play, not Utoff. Would I rather have someone else shooting the buzzer beater than 0-7 McCabe? You bet. But Gessell is not going to remain at 67% this year. He is one of the guys you want taking that shot. He just didn't get it done last night.

To me it's who gets me most excited before shooting. In teams past it was guys like Boyd, Haluska, Kingsbury and Recker. That person was josh for me last year. Maybe it's just me wanting him to succeed. Fran says he's legit. I don't know if that makes sense. It's just something different than all the others firing it up

Iowa is going to be a better basketball team with Josh Oglesby available. If you don't see that, then you're pretty much just hating on Josh

Probably would have been fewer turnovers and better passing last night with Josh and better free throw shooting. Hilton is too hostile an environment for Peter at this stage. It is one of the toughest places to play in America. Still free throws missed late in the game killed us. Iowa State didn't win the game, we gave it to them. The Clones were in the Bonus + a long time while we were throwing the ball in from out of bounds, a Long time. Not only that, the Hilton Magic is very apparent against the Iowa Women and Men. Last night the difference was: 14-21 vs 23-36 in favor of Iowa State. We actually shot free throws at a better percentage: 66.7 vs 63.9.....

I just looked up the box score from the women's game. I didn't see the game, nor am I thinking this has anything to with lopsided officiating, but I saw that ISU shot 49 free throws. I don't know if I've ever heard of someone shooting that many FT's in a game.

Iowa Women shot 13-20, not really that big a discrepancy. They only shot 29 more free throws. There can't be that big a difference in floor play between the two teams......

Something is amiss......
