Would Oglesby Been the Difference?

First of all let me say I am optimistic in Jok's upside but every time I seen him on the court last night I kept saying to myself this is where we could have used Oglesby. I can't help but wonder had he been in the game if Long would have made all those 3 pointers and his free throw shooting may have come in handy at the end of the game.

Thoughts?

Are you kidding, JO would have been picking splinters.
For most of the game, yes. But Jok would have been picking splinters the entire game, and that would have been a plus.

Josh might have gone 0-for-2 from three, but he wouldn't have turned the ball over twice in 8 minutes, or play awful defense. Jok did.

I think getting up to 20 solid minutes out of Josh would have made at least an 8 point difference in the game.

I was all in for josh red shirting before the Atlantis trip for selfish reasons, but as I stated in another thread I'm ready for him to take the court. His defense and ft shooting will be needed, especially the way the game is called these days. Just hoping he can improve to at least 33% from the field.

Great question but given his history what big games and/or big shots with the game on the line do we have to go on? I can only think of the IL game last year where he hit 2 threes down the stretch which were the difference in that game (prior to missing the first 5 or 6). No other game or game defining situation stands out that I recall.

Maybe as a junior he will produce as a shooter? That would be huge.

Jok was awful last night, JO couldn't have been worse. But I doubt he would have been the difference.

Good point ssckelley, he very well might have been the difference. I do think if he is able to come back and be BB shape Joks min. will be hard to come by. And that is not a knock on Jok.

JO play better defense.

More importantly, at the end of a game, JO can shoot FTs.

Gabe and Basabe have > FT% than Marble and Gesell. You can't have your point guards on the floor at the end of games shoot FT% of 65% and 60% and expect to win tight games.

Hard to know if he would have been the difference last nite, but certainly could have helped a lot. Again, Jok has been forced into tight tough games that he is simply not ready for...at least on the road. Josh has been thru the grinder on the road in the Big Ten twice, and so he should be ready to really step up this year. I welcome his return.

Gesell entered the game shooting 80% from the line and had an awful night. NOW his % is down to 66.7%. He's also only taken 15 free throws this year, so just a couple misses brings his average WAY down. He's a good free throw shooter and Fran would be stupid not to have him on the floor at the end of a close game.

I don't think you get it. It's not about offense. JO is a very good man-to-man defender, which is something we desperately needed last night and against other good teams that can put 5 scorers on the floor at one time. His perimeter defense would have certainly been welcome last night.

Iowa is going to be a better basketball team with Josh Oglesby available. If you don't see that, then you're pretty much just hating on Josh

True. No one said anything about not playing him at the end of a game. Aside from the typo of 60% and 67%, the point stands. It is what it is even if Gesell's numbers are light.

You can't have your two guards shoot under 70% (or 7-13 in a specific game) and expect to win tight games.

Jok was trying waaaaay too hard last night. His day will come. Right now he isn't the kind of player who can hop off the bench and just start making it rain.

Oglesby may certainly have made a difference last night. Especially when Iowa shoots 23% from 3.

No. Maybe. Probably. Yes. Who knows for sure but we were one play away from a different outcome. Jok was not ready for that stage. Not a knock at all on him. He is a fine player and will get better. It would have been nice to have JO as an option. We needed a hot hand at the end and his perimeter defense is better than most realize.

Not sure if you were around here last year Jon.

I can't say Oglesby would have been the difference because I haven't seen him this season. If he comes back. and plays well maybe I can look back to last night and think differently.

Thought about starting a thread like this myself.

Jok was out of sorts.
McCabe had a rare horrible shooting night.

Yes, OGs would probably have made a positive difference.

Can't have too many weapons as last night attested to.
