Would a new coach midseason bring back the fans?

If a new coach was brought in midseason (even if it was a temporary hire), would that bring back the fans? Would that be enough to start to inject a little hope back into Hawkeyenation?

i don't see how it could hurt. What would we lose more? Score less? Turn em lose let the guys have fun

A question for both of you . . . Did you answer no because you still think Lick deserves more of a chance or is it because all hope is lost?

No because of apathy in the fan base. The Purdue game may have given the fans some hope, but following that game up with 2 where it was effectively over by the under 8 TV timeout in the first half let the air out of the ballon real quick. Besides, any "mid-season" hiring is going to be someone from the current staff, not Bruce Pearl or Keno Davis.

But to answer your questions...a little bit of both. Iowa really only has a decent shot at one more win this year, and that's tomorrow night. Maybe they beat Indiana and Penn State when they come to Carver, but it's a stretch to think this team will get to 10 wins this year. So yeah, hope is gone for this year. It's been gone since last spring when Kelly and Co. walked out the door.

That being said, Lickliter deserves to the opportunity to show what he can do when everyone comes back. If it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out, but Lickliter deserves the chance. If anyone deserves some good fortune, it's him.

Imo, Lick has primarily made his own bed with where things stand with the program. It is his fault and nobody else's. Bringing in a Gillespie in mid season would certainly change my outlook on where this team and program is headed (from a negative to a positive). And the current players would probably feel the same way.

lets see... Alford leaves Iowa, the fan base in large part rejoices, iowa hires the COTY and he is welcomed to an empty arena. I think history tells us no. A new coach will not bring in fans.

Fans love to complain about coaches and claim that they won't go to another game until a new coach comes in when the program is having a bad season...but attendance didn't suffer under Alford when we had good teams. And we now have a new coach which everyone practically begged for and look where we are.

Get real...coaching changes don't just turn around programs...in fact they really hinder a program's progress and should be avoided at all costs. We've had some down years because the same fans who are trying to run Lickliter out of town tried to run Alford out of town and succeeded...when will some Iowa fans learn.

I'm not a big fan of bringing in a coach mid-season. 99 percent of the time it will be an interim coach and won't do anything productive.

I would also love to see Lick catch a break. He seems like a good guy who works hard. Plus, his success has rewards for me as I will get to be entertained by Iowa basketball again.

For the record, I would love the same, I think it would be best for the program if he got this thing going right by next season. I think at this point though he might have to adapt his personal philosophy a little to reel some of the fan base back as well as winning more games.

If he is truly the great basketball mind that he has been billed to be (I'm not sure if he is or isn't) this should be no problem. Right now he is battling entertainment venues like going grocery shopping and cleaning the basement. Winning more games is first but keeping it as entertaining as possible is a close second right now.

Coaches don't draw fans period. With the exception of maybe Bobby Knight or Tom Davis (neither of which would come) who could we hire that would draw people to come watch games?

This argument is completely rediculous.

Winning more will bring more fans. There is no one we could hire that can come in and win right now.

I'll bet if we hired Shawn Johnson attendance would go up.... or one of the hooters girls.... or a two headed cow...

Hire the coach from Grinnell and have him bring his "system".
At least it would be fun to watch them shoot before they turn it over.

To all the Lick supporters who stick to saying "Lick is the right coach. Lick will get it done,"... I keep asking this: "Is the Iowa program in better shape today than it was three years ago when he took over?" ... No ... Enough said ...

I think it's a little too easy to say that. Is Lick the guy? I have no idea but it's not as easy as you try and make it out to be.

I have said this and I will say it again, I think he gets another year and if the team doesn't improve by leaps and bounds next year then I think he is gone. But you have to give the guy time to get his own players in here.

Take a look at what Mac went through at ISU, it was the same thing guys leaving the program and they had a few down years and now the program is more stable and things are starting to turn around.
