Worst Hawk team in a decade

In 2000, Kirk's second year, the lack of talent was mostly a result of Hayden staying on a couple of years too long, and leaving the cupboard bare.

2012 is Kirk's 14th year. The lack of talent on the 2012 Iowa roster is 100% the responsiblity of Kirk Ferentz and his staff. The lack of accountability placed on Kirk by many Iowa fans (and most of the Iowa media) for the current predictament of the program is disturbing.

Very well stated. Totally agree.

I think the media part of this equation will change soon. Iowa and Kirk had a stranglehold on this state for years, but now, ISU is becoming the media darlings, especially with their "ra-ra" coaches. I think the media is getting fed up with Kirk's stonewall tactics and it's accelerated by the fact that ISU basically gives them full access. For the longest time, Iowa media didn't ask the tough questions out of fear of stepping on Kirk's feet but now, I don't think there is that fear anymore. And if the season continues to go south expect those softballs that got lobbed up to him turn into chin music fastballs.

I'm still unclear on how we got to this point. What chain of events occurred that resulted in such an inept group of players?
In the 14th year of being a head coach at a major program, why couldn't Ferrets put a higher quality product on the field??

2008 and 2009 were probably the two worst recruiting classes under KF. Not only that, but it's somewhere around half or less than half of the players from those classes are still even here. So when you combined bad players in 2 straight recruiting classes that are supposed to be your juniors and seniors plus fewer bodies available from those classes, and well, you've got the youngest team in the KF era.

Add on the fact that we're learning a brand new offensive system with a guy that might be even more conservative than Kirk in GD and you've got a recipe for 1 td in 8 quarters.

The media has had to tap-dance around fragile egos in Iowa City for a long time, ie Hayden getting p/o'd at Ron Gonder and having him kicked off doing play-by-play on WMT.

So far I haven't read or heard any of these hard hitting questions asked from the media yet. Same dance different day. I'm still waiting on these....

2007 is the only year that will give this year a run for it's money. That said, we could be the worst team in a decade and not be bad. Not that a 6-6 season would be much fun.

Which B1G team does Iowa beat this year? Are you really that impressed with the defense of ISU or NIU? Probably not, the talent we compete against will be better and Minny and NW are more gritty and grindy than either of those 2 teams

Yes indeed. Maybe being hard headed, conservative, and lacking a couple gunslingers that can recruit would be starters. The Greg Davis hire has the potential to be his undoing. The program doesn't have enough time to recuperate from a bad OC hire to then try to recruit players to fit another new system.

Having difficulty recruiting good skill posotion players? Look at our conservative style of play with focus on defense, field position, time of possession, etc. How does that attract top talent on the offensive side?

Indiana, Penn State (their offense is inept too though they can defend), Northwestern hasn't really been good defensively the last couple years so a bad offensive team could score on them, Minnesota isn't good and it's at home. Heck, none of the teams who are michigan State look that impressive and Michigan State is TBD for me right now. Every time I think of Iowa's struggles, I then look at the Big Ten teams and see they aren't really that good either.

I'm going to hold judgement for awhile. I remember the walking out of Kinnick the last time ISU won there thinking how is Iowa going to win another game with that pass defense? Teams are just going to take 8-12 yard chunks at will against them. They got things figured out.

It sucks to say, but we've seen this before. Iowa has lost to some pathetic teams under KF. ISU several times, NW '05, Indiana '06, NW '06, Minnesota '06, Indiana '07, W Mich '07, Minnesota '10 and '11. 2010 Minnesota was on their way to being one of if not the worst B10 team in a quarter century before they beat Iowa.

They may lose to an FCS foe next week for the first time in my memory, and I can go back to the early 1980s. They'll recover. It may take some time, but KF isn't going anywhere and he's proven he can bring his team back from tough times.

Question for those of you in the stadium. Did the hawks seem to play with emotion? On TV I rarely see much passion from iowa.

Outside of last season, we haven't been able to score against NW's ****** defenses...no way this offense does in its current state.

I'm gonna hold off on writing them off for another week or so. More than any college I've witnessed during the last 13 years, the Hawkeyes have a way of playing to the level of their opponents. I would guess that there has been maybe 10 lopsided games either way in the last 8 years or so. Some years we come out on top, others it bites us in the a$$. This has always frustrated me but makes for some exciting finishes. This year may continue that trend. We have a couple more weeks to develop before b1g starts. Hopefully we can progress in that time.

The number of coaches that have been able to duplicate a "rebuilding" process at the same school is few and far between. The odds are not in KFs favor to be able to do that. I'll let the year play out, but it does appear right now that our win totals from 2009 to now will go: 11, 8, 7, 4/5....that is a terrible trend.

I don't understand all of the negativity. The B1G is not so good this year. Iowa has a real shot at winning the whole damn thing. Things will come together against UNI and I would say that anything less than 7 wins would be a disappointment.

What, in the first two games, leads you to believe that the "light" will all of a sudden come on against UNI? We were told all last week that the biggest jump in improvement comes between week 1 and week 2. Unfortunately, other than the sack total, we regressed. So now we're supposed to believe that the jump is going to come in week 3? There is no jump coming....this year has 4 or 5 wins written all over it....easy schedule or not.

Agreed.

New system, yes, although 2 of the 3 teams that beat Big Ten teams last Saturday had new coaching staffs. But conservative? When you're repeatedly sending WR's deep but they're either not being targetted by Vandy (vs NIU) or not getting open (NIU and ISU), is that 'conservative'? We also haven't hesitated to throw the ball in our end of the field, and even tried aggressively to score at the end of the half vs. NIU.

Guys like gamefilm who've forgotten more about football then I'll ever know have been pretty clear: while they might quibble with a call here and there, play-calling hasn't been Iowa's problem.
