woodbury

Haven't seen an anti woodbury thread for a while. I know he has a lot of haters out there. I think he looked much improved to start the season. The last few games it seems like he has made almost an equal improvement since the start of the season. Looking for the jumper, being aggressive and not dropping the ball below his waist before making a move. The biggest improvement is his defensive positioning and toughness. His future seems to be bright.

He did a lot of nice things yesterday. Nice jump shots. He's making free throws. He's a good defender. He's tough.

Agree that hitting the free throw jumper will help open up the interior. Also nice to see him avoid the 1-2 fouls per game hedging the high ball screen. He seems to recognize he needs to get there sooner or not make contact if he gets there late. Inside out game with him seemed more effective early in the season, hopefully they go back to it. He has god vision and passes well from the post.

I wish he would get more touches. As a team we're very poor at entering the ball into the post, but with how many screens Woody sets for our guards, you gotta reward him with a touch once in a while.

Woody played a good game last night. Our defense is exponentially better since we have had real C playing the C position. Remember the days of McCabe playing the C position???? I for one am glad that we have Woody and Gabe back there now. Are either one perfect? No, but they both bring a lot to the table for Iowa.

He's getting better. It must suck being a low post player now - what is a foul, what isn't a foul, because I swear they look the same.

I agree, I was complaining about this in the game thread. You cannot even simply stand straight up with your hands in the air without getting a foul called on you. Evidently the NCAA does not want anybody playing defense, if someone drives to the hoop then you gotta get out of their way.

Absolutely agree with this and it's not just Woody. There are times I see Mel, White with a post and we tend to be happy swinging it around the top.

Remember, we just played a really bad Northwestern team. Woody needs to get better in the tough situations before I jump on the bandwagon. I think Woody will be good by his senior yesr.

I think this hits the nail on the head. He might be the best defensive player on the team. Rarely is he out of position on defense and in the rare case he is, it's usually because he hedges out a little too far on the ball screen and has a hard time getting back to his man. Which even then, it's hard to call him out of position because he is still disrupting the other team's ball movement in the process. He positions himself very well on the post and bodies up his man better than anyone else. No matter who he is defending, they do not get any easy buckets.

Of course he played decent... he played against NW for christ sake.

Get back to me about your feelings toward him after the OSU game.

He's a beast. I miss the block-o-meter threads, etc.

Ah yes, the thread Duff started in an attempt to prove Woodbury would not be a shot blocker. That thread died when for much of last season he was averaging almost 1 per game, he ended up with 29 blocks in 38 games. Those numbers are down this year and Duff would have been all over it.

woody's position defense, and his hedges and recoveries, are better than Gabe's, and he's doing an adequate job at both for a B10 center

he's slow. really slow. he has short arms and he's still filling out his frame -- all those things are limiters for his rebounding and scoring. the one he can really improve is strength, and that may come next year.

Big Men that aren't absolute freaks (Anthony Davis) take a long time to develop. He is coming along nicely, big part of our defense.

He's definitely been playing better lately. Not always scoring a lot (5 points at ISU), but doing other things well (11 boards at ISU). And his scoring has been up a little in the first few conference games. 10 points last night and 8 against Nebraska (had 3 against Wisky but was in foul trouble all night). He's coming along alright, and I think next year is when we see him start to make more of a mark on the offensive end.

Sure don't miss Duffbag. Forum has been much better lately with the bannings.
